Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Eighty-four inmates serving sentences at the Peu Peu prison, southern Cunene province, were released on Friday under the amnesty law.<\/b><\/p>\n

In addition to those covered by the Amnesties law, 30 prisoners were also released for serving their sentences.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the presiding judge of the District Court of Cuanhama, Afonso Pinto, appealed to those returned to freedom to refrain from criminal practices in order not to return to prison, and should be guided by well-being and acceptable social conduct.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the need for those covered to face life with greater responsibility and determination and encouraged those not covered to behave well in order to benefit from extended leaves.<\/p>\n

On his turn, the sub-prosecutor of the Republic in Cunene, Ame\u0301rico Kassoma, clarified that intentional crimes that resulted in death, those committed using firearms, trafficking in human beings, organs, drugs, sexual rape, aid to illegal immigration, among others, do not benefit from amnesty, but are pardoned for a quarter of their sentences.<\/p>\n

He said that all those covered by the Amnesty Law will be released, but those who are in the generic pardon may or may not be released, taking into account that this clause determines the removal of a quarter of the prisoner’s sentence.<\/p>\n

The Magistrate also explained that the Amnesty Law has several requirements, one of which is the repair of damage caused to others. As an example, the judicial magistrate pointed out property crimes, that is, theft of goods, provided that the property is returned to the injured party.<\/p>\n

“The amnesty holder who commits a crime in the three subsequent years with a one-year sentence will again be taken to prison and will serve the sentence again”, he recalled.<\/p>\n

Located 123 kilometers from Ondjiva, the current Peu Peu penitentiary population is 1,576 inmates, including convicted and preventive prisoners.<\/p>\n
