Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola participated, this Wednesday, in the presentation of the project to support the universalization and effective implementation of the convention on biological weapons in Africa, in a session that took place in Geneva (Switzerland).<\/b><\/p>\n

The information is expressed in a press release from the Permanent Mass of Angola in that country, underlining the fact that the Angolan State has been party to the said Convention since 2016.<\/p>\n

According to the document, Angola appointed the National Authority for Arms Control and Disarmament (ANCAD) as the National Contact Point for the Convention.<\/p>\n

At the event, ANCAD shared some of its priorities, fundamentally those relating to the development of legislation and the preparation and submission of Confidence-Building Measures.<\/p>\n

The document refers that Angola warned that Africa is a continent with its own particularities, which implies adjusting this type of initiatives to concrete assistance actions.<\/p>\n

The Biological Weapons Convention is an arms control agreement that prohibits the production, development, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons.<\/p>\n

Currently, 189 Member States, including Angola, are party to the agreement, which has provisions for the systematic assessment of the chemical industry, as well as for investigations of allegations of use and production of biological weapons for military purposes.<\/p>\n
