Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of State and Head of the Military House of the President of the Republic, Francisco Furtado, said Thursday that with peaceful and reconciling acts, Angola advocates the promotion of peace processes between States and excellent bilateral relations, especially between neighboring countries.<\/b><\/p>\n

The minister represented the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, in the central act of the 35th anniversary of the battle of Cuito Cuanavale, which took place on March 23, 1988.<\/p>\n

Speaking in the locality of Cuito Cuanavale, Angolan province of Cuando Cubango, the minister referred that Angola’s actions contribute to a process of harmonious regional and continental integration, with relations of cooperation and partnership in the most varied domains, mainly in those in which the valences of each can contribute to the creation of reciprocal advantages.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot forget that, today, one of SADC’s strategies is to guarantee economic well-being, the improvement of quality of life standards, freedom and social justice, preserving the unshakable foundations of the Democratic State and of Law , security for the people and the territorial integrity of the countries\u201d, stressed the Minister of State.<\/p>\n

For Francisco Furtado, the battle of Cuito Cuanavale gave the Republic of Angola the responsibility of contributing to the process of pacifying conflicts in Africa and in the Southern Region, in particular.<\/p>\n

On the consecration of the 23rd of March as “Day of the Liberation of Southern Africa”, the official stressed that it is the fairest tribute to the Angolans who fought so that Angola remained one and indivisible, exerting its influence in the States of the Southern Region of Africa and to create an environment of peace and stability that allows the consolidation of democracies.<\/p>\n

\u201c35 years have passed since the memorable Battle of Cui\u0301to Cuanavale, which celebrated a generation of unquestionable heroes of our country, whose performance of these brave Angolan fighters inspired us in the pursuit of the fight to conquer definitive peace, thus opening a new page for progress and development of our homeland\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

He said that it is necessary to continue with the work of improving the living conditions of the population, so that the fighters who did not falter in the face of the apartheid regime’s intention to perpetuate itself in the region should be permanently honored.<\/p>\n

The battle of Cuito Cuanavale took place in the Angolan town of the same name, in the province of Cuando Cubango, between the extinct Popular Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA), supported by Cuban internationalists, and the extinct Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FALA ) affects UNITA, with the military support of the then South African apartheid regime.<\/p>\n

It ran from November 15, 1987 to March 23, 1988.<\/p>\n

The victory of FAPLA, supervised by the Angolan Government, created the conditions for the independence of Namibia, the release of Nelson Mandela and the abolition of the Apartheid regime in South Africa.<\/p>\n

March 23 is celebrated as the International Day for the Liberation of Southern Africa.<\/p>\n
