Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The surgical intervention of the first group of 25 women suffering from obstetric fistula, at Hospital Geral do Moxico, took place satisfactorily, in Luena.<\/b><\/p>\n

Among the first 25 women who underwent surgery, an 11-year-old teenager stands out, who had been the victim of sexual violation, as well as an elderly woman who has been living with the disease for 33 years.<\/p>\n

These patients were operated on as part of a campaign, which began on Monday, with the involvement of 30 health professionals from the country’s capital (Luanda) and the province of Huambo, which provides for more than 120 surgical interventions. .<\/p>\n

According to the obstetrician-gynecologist, Vanderley Anto\u0301nio, the first surgeries were successful, stating that after the operation the patients were submitted to tests to assess the possible resistance of the fistula.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey all passed the test, with no cases of resistance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to the specialist, after surgery, patients will be hospitalized for a period of 14 to 18 days for the recovery process.<\/p>\n

At the time, Beatriz Tchicango, one of the operated patients, who had been living with the problem for six years, highlighted the process, stating that it could transform her life, since she was a victim of stigma within her family.<\/p>\n

“She wasn’t a free person, because she was despised” she said with emotion, an opinion corroborated by the patient Ana Vumbi.<\/p>\n

Obstetric fistula is a serious injury between the bladder and the vaginal canal or between the rectum and the vagina, caused by a prolonged, obstructed and unassisted delivery.<\/p>\n

Studies indicate that the problem causes incontinence and leads, in some cases, to loss of urine and feces control, leaving patients practically excluded from society.<\/p>\n

In Angola, statistics point to almost eight thousand women affected by the disease, which causes a lot of discomfort, due to the fact that patients are always leaking urine and emit a strong smell, and are therefore despised by their partners.<\/p>\n
