Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Diplomats of the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations, in Geneva (Switzerland), participated, Tuesday, in the annual celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peacekeepers, under the theme \u201cPeace begins with me\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

Organized by the United Nations Information Service in Geneva in collaboration with the international association of peacekeepers, the event took place at the United Nations memorial (Ariana park) in the Palace of Nations.<\/p>\n

The ceremony paid tribute \u201cto the dedication, courage and high professionalism of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations\u201d, as well as honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in defense of peace.<\/p>\n

The moment was marked by declarations by the director general of the UN office in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, by the president of the international association of peacemakers, Laurent Attar-Bayrou, and by the permanent representative of Bangladesh, Mohammad Sufiur Rahman.<\/p>\n

The celebrations of the International Day of the Blue Berets also known as \u201cthe agents of hope\u201d mark one of the most important moments of the global campaign \u201cPeace begins with me\u201d, an initiative that illustrates the impact of UN peacekeeping operations and its partners.<\/p>\n

Currently, more than 87 thousand blue berets, from 125 countries, are part of 12 peacekeeping operations.<\/p>\n

UN history indicates that, since 1948, Blue Berets have helped to prevent conflict in many countries, protect civilians, promote political solutions and support democratic processes incorporating the promotion of human rights, empowering public institutions and ensuring that women and young people to lead and participate in peace and nation-building processes.<\/p>\n
