Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Universal access to affordable housing is among the highlights of the themes addressed by the Assembly of the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat), which takes place from the 5th to the 9th of this month, in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.<\/b><\/p>\n

For five days, delegates from the 193 Member States of the United Nations (UN), including Angola, are being encouraged to explore mechanisms to achieve the universal right to adequate housing and to move towards the elimination of existing barriers to acquisition of affordable homes.<\/p>\n

Under the motto “A sustainable urban future through inclusive and effective multilateralism”, event participants also reflect on recovery from urban crises, with a view to encouraging Member States to empower cities to respond to urban crises and support national recovery efforts.<\/p>\n

Alongside this, the delegates to the Assembly also evaluate the activities of UN-Habitat, including matters of coordination and analysis of the progress achieved in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, according to a note that reached press yesterday.<\/p>\n

Among other topics under discussion, urban climate action also stands out, given the global commitment not to exceed the limit of 1.5 degrees centigrade in temperature rise by 2030.<\/p>\n

Additionally, participants appreciate reports on the World Urban Forum and address the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan for the period 2024-2027, the event is expected to end with the release of a Ministerial Declaration and the approval of Projects of Resolution.<\/p>\n

At the event, Angola is represented with a delegation headed by the ambassador and permanent representative of Angola at UN-Habitat, Sianga Abi\u0301lio.<\/p>\n

The inaugural session of the UN-Habitat Assembly, this Monday, was witnessed by several entities, with emphasis on the UN Secretary General, Anto\u0301nio Guterres, by videoconference, and the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the respective entities highlighted the importance of the Member States of the United Nations assuming the commitment, by 2050, to implement housing construction projects in resilient and sustainable urban areas, a challenge that, according to the President of the Republic of Kenya, passes by multilateral action.<\/p>\n

The Assembly is UN-Habitat’s governing body and meets every four years, with the Executive Board, of which Angola is a member, being responsible for annually defining action plans, programs and respective budgets, as well as monitoring its implementation.<\/p>\n
