Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union (AU), Miguel Bembe, considered, this Thursday, essential that countries in a situation of financial default with the AU materialize the payment plan for accumulated arrears.<\/b><\/p>\n

This is the arrears payment plan established by the continental organisation, underlined Miguel Bembe, who is also Angola’s ambassador in Ethiopia and the country’s representative at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).<\/p>\n

While chairing the Meeting of Ambassadors of the Ministerial Committee on the Scale of Assessment and Contributions of the African Union, in Addis-Ababa, the Angolan diplomat appealed to the referred countries to state their reasons, in case of registration of failures.<\/p>\n

Cited by a note from the Embassy of Angola in Ethiopia, Miguel Bembe recalled that the AU has recently faced serious difficulties in relation to its Member States, resulting from multiple phenomena.<\/p>\n

He said that the difficulties result, among other factors, from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine crisis, climate change and crises arising from internal conflicts in Africa.<\/p>\n

He referred that the impact of these phenomena has inhibited, in some way, the realization of statutory contributions in many Member States.<\/p>\n

The Representative of Angola informed that the situation has also contributed to the increase of economic and financial pressures, which translate into delays in the commitments of the Member States.<\/p>\n

The said situations, said the diplomat, have meant that some Member States are covered by the sanctions regime in force in the continental organization, something reflected in one of the reports presented at the session.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking forward to the payment plan for pending contributions being implemented under the terms of the agreement entered into between the parties, with the objective of reaching the USD 400 million defined for the Revitalized Peace Fund\u201d, noted the head of the Angolan Diplomatic Mission<\/p>\n

in Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n

Regarding the Assessment and Contribution Scale for the three-year period 2024-2026, Ambassador Miguel Bembe thanked the Committee of Fifteen Experts for Finance for the proposals presented.<\/p>\n

He praised the pragmatism on the part of the different delegations, in order to facilitate the work of the ministerial meeting, scheduled for next Monday (10), in virtual format, chaired by the Angolan Minister of Finance, Vera Daves.<\/p>\n
