Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, has already returned to the country’s capital, after having reopened, this Monday, in Soyo (Zaire), the Naval Base.<\/b><\/p>\n

On the occasion, which also marked the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of the Angolan Navy (MGA), the Statesman underlined the need for the country to invest in more maritime bases to house the fleet that tends to grow in number and size of vessels.<\/p>\n

The also Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces mentioned the fact that, once peace has been achieved, it will be necessary to pay attention to strengthening the Angolan Navy (MGA), with infrastructure on land, maritime vessels of all categories and surveillance systems, to protect the coast that extends for about one thousand and 650 kilometers.<\/p>\n

For the Statesman, Angola, due to its location, along with other states in the Central and Southern regions of Africa, must be prepared to contribute to the security of the Gulf of Guinea, an important maritime route for international trade.<\/p>\n

This, he stressed, is due to the fact that the navy has the responsibility of defending the territorial waters against any external threats, maritime piracy, illegal fishing and the depredation of the immense national wealth at sea.<\/p>\n

The North Naval Base, built in a total construction area of \u200b\u200b111 thousand and 500 square meters, has an access channel and a maneuvering basin, which led to the dredging of 6 million and 130 thousand cubic meters of land, and in it stand out the wharf, with a length of 330 meters, as well as the three wharf bridges, with a total length of 374 meters.<\/p>\n

It also includes a 115-metre floating walkway for mooring light vessels, a landing ramp, among other components.<\/p>\n

In addition to the new installations, the land works also included the old military base where the administrative support services will operate, spaces for physical activities, cafeteria, fire detection and energy systems.<\/p>\n

The process of expanding and modernizing the infrastructure, which started in March 2021, was an investment by the Angolan government.<\/p>\n

The Soyo Naval Base is a support unit for the North Naval Region, which, in addition to Zaire, includes the provisions of Luanda, Bengo and Cabinda.<\/p>\n
