Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Angolan President, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, meets this Friday in Gaborone with his Tswanese counterpart, Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, as part of his two-day state visit that began Thursday. <\/b><\/p>\n

At the meeting, the two heads of state will, among other matters, examine the status of the partnership between their respective countries, since the signing of the General Cooperation Agreement (AGC), in February 1976, shortly after Angola’s independence.<\/p>\n

One of the outstanding points on the agenda of the two statesmen concerns the convening of the inaugural session of the Joint Permanent Commission for Angola-Botswana Cooperation, two countries whose diplomatic relations are heading towards the celebration of their 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n

In addition to matters on bilateral relations, the two leaders will also address issues of regional and international interest, before a joint press conference.<\/p>\n

The agenda of the Angolan statesman’s visit to the Tswanese capital and headquarters of the Southern African Development Community also includes official discussions between the delegations of both countries on the perspectives of strengthening bilateral cooperation and its expansion to new areas.<\/p>\n

Cooperation between Angola and Botswana covers several sectors, particularly diamonds, transport, agriculture, water resources, education and the environment.<\/p>\n

The two countries are at an advanced stage of negotiating new legal instruments to revitalize their partnership, within the framework of the General Cooperation Agreement, with emphasis on the judiciary, tax and technology domains.<\/p>\n

In this context, they intend to briefly initial agreements on Judicial Assistance in Criminal Matters, on the Transfer of Persons Sentenced to Deprival of Liberty Sentences and on the Creation of a Bi-National Commission.<\/p>\n

A Protocol of Cooperation between the Ministries of Justice and an Agreement on the Elimination of Double Taxation with regard to taxes on Income from Work and the Prevention of Fraud and Tax Evasion is also being forged.<\/p>\n

It is also intended to expand cooperation between the two countries in the areas of fauna and flora management and conservation, particularly in terms of removing anti-personnel mines in the Okavango region of Angola.<\/p>\n

These are explosive devices that, among other evils, prevent or make impossible the transhumance of elephants in the Chobe National Park, in Kasane, making Botswana currently have the largest population of elephants in the world.<\/p>\n

Still in the field of natural resources, Botswana expressed interest in acquiring oil derivatives from Angola and technological services to be provided within the scope of Angosat2.<\/p>\n
