Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The General Tax Administration (AGT) will, from the first half of 2024, install electronic devices for capturing and encoding images (SCANNER) at the main border posts in the country, for the non-intrusive inspection of goods.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the North Regional Director of AGT, Ricardo Aguiar, who was speaking to the press on Sunday at the No\u0301qui border post, in Zaire province, these devices will be installed at land border posts and airports.<\/p>\n

For the purpose, he informed that technical teams are deployed in visits to the different land border posts in Angola, for data collection work and other relevant information for the implementation of this project.<\/p>\n

By the way, the governor of Zaire, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, who was also at the No\u0301qui border post, considered the AGT measure fundamental, for the reinforcement of inspection and control of goods that enter and leave the national territory.<\/p>\n

“It has always been a very big fight, for the more efficient control and inspection of border trade, of goods that enter and leave the national territory”, underlined the governor.<\/p>\n

For Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, the installation of SCANNER devices is an added value for Angola and also for neighboring countries, as it allows knowing what type of merchandise is moving from one side to the other.<\/p>\n

Governor announces meeting with DRC authorities<\/p>\n

The governor of the province of Zaire, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, admitted, Sunday, in the border town of No\u0301qui, that the tax authorities of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may interact to resolve the issue of the unilateral increase in the toll rate from 150 to 250 US dollars in the latter neighboring country.<\/p>\n

Adriano Mendes de Carvalho went to the said border post with the purpose of finding out about the situation of 30 trucks, bound for Cabinda province, having stayed more than seven days at the site, for refusing to pay the new toll fee.<\/p>\n

“We have already written and presented our concerns and, I believe, that soon there will be a solution to the problem”, he underlined, in statements to the press, stressing that the truck drivers submitted to the demands of the DRC authorities and had already traveled to Cabinda province.<\/p>\n

The official did not rule out the possibility of the Angolan authorities applying the principle of reciprocity, in this specific case, which would also involve an increase in the tax rate for truck drivers from the neighboring country who transit in the national territory.<\/p>\n

However, he considered the existence of an agreement between the two countries to be fundamental, relegating this responsibility to the superior instances of the two States and Governments.<\/p>\n

Still on this situation, the vice-consul of Angola in Matadi, capital of the Congo Central region (DRC), Francisco Santos, who was also present at the No\u0301qui border post, also admitted that the competent structures of Angola and the DRC are already aware of the situation and are working to find a consensual solution.<\/p>\n

He characterized the relations of neighbourhood, friendship, brotherhood and cooperation between Angola and the DRC as excellent, stressing that it is within the framework of this spirit that the aim is to find a common denominator in the situation created.<\/p>\n

The territorial discontinuity between Cabinda and the rest of the country means that access by land to that northernmost province of Angola must be done through the territory of the DRC.<\/p>\n

The province of Zaire shares a 310 kilometer border with the DRC<\/p>\n
