It is a shameful act,” she maintains.

Despite being a ritual, also ‘consumed’ by time, given the strong influence of modernity values, the traditional authority argues that this practice was considered beneficial, because it allowed a deep knowledge of the partner’s uses and customs from an early age.

“Today, there are many conflicts in homes, because young people disrespect this stage, limiting themselves to getting married without having the necessary knowledge of the partner”, maintains the authority.

To do justice to his position, he exemplifies the case of his wife, with whom he has had a relationship since he was nine, something that has lasted 40 years.

Nyamucho – a female school

Among the uses and customs in the region, the Nyamucho – female circumcision – a ritual that aims at preparing the woman before joining her partner.

Nyamucho is considered a traditional school where women receive instructions from older people in the community on the model of life and relationship, behavior and treatment of the husband.

Unlike the Mukanda, as happens in several other tribes and cultures in the region, in which the man is isolated for a period of three to six months or even a year to receive instructions from adults, in Nyamucho the women of the region, normally in the transition from adolescence to adulthood, benefit from the teachings of the matriarchs, in an interval of two weeks to one month.

“When a woman goes through this ritual, it means that she has reached maturity to start her own family”, she says.

Mungongue – The magic of leaders

In more remote times, in the region of Cangamba reigned a magical practice, called Mungongue, which served to strengthen the sovereignty and power of authorities.

When an authority was indicated to assume an important position in the principality or sovereign, he was mysteriously taken to the Mungongue, a clandestine place, to be baptized and receive the powers of the patriarchs.

According to Prince Cangamba, authority is transported, at night, by a flying animal, without the knowledge of the inhabitants of the community, to Mungongue, where a special party is held, in a gesture of welcome.

“When transported, the person screams, but no one in the community can hear the screams or realize the scene”, he reinforces.

Questioned whether it was a sorcery practice, the authority denied it, considering it a ritual of the tribe’s own and cultural nature, which will have disappeared over time.

Several tribes, but united in diversity

Despite the linguistic diversity, given the cultural mosaic of the region, the cohabitation of the different tribes in the region is healthy.

According to António Canguya, in the region reigns the spirit of concord and respect between people from different tribes, who work together for better living conditions, in a municipality marked by lack of communication routes for the flow of agricultural products to shopping centres.

“Among tribes, we live well, we marry each other and we love each other”, assumes the traditional authority.

the municipality

With 20 thousand inhabitants, residing in a territorial area of 43 thousand and 180 kilometres, the municipality of Luchazes, the southernmost region of Luena, has four communes, namely Tempué, Muié, Cassamba and Congombe.

Located more than 350 kilometers south of the city of Luena, capital of Moxico, Luchazes has agricultural potential, honey production and water resources.

The also former Vila de Aljustrel in the colonial era was established in 1907. In 1909, it became the captaincy of the Luchazes (PP 275, of April 1, 1909), according to the Portuguese official bulletin of March 14, 1922.

Under Decree-Law No. 109, the region was separated from Moxico (headquarters municipality) to form the Luchazes district, with the capital headquarters set in Cangamba.

It has a cultural mosaic that brings together several ethnic tribes, such as Luchazes, Kangalas, Yahumas, Bundas, Nganguelas, Cokwes and Vasekeli, the latter belonging to the Khoisan group.

Luchazes, formerly Vila Aljustrel, borders the province of Cuando-Cubango to the south, through the municipalities of Mavinga and Cuito Cuanavale, and to the west with Bié, through the regions of Chitembo and Camacupa.

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
