Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Speaking at a meeting with Permanent Representatives of Portuguese-speaking countries at the UN, as part of the CPLP Day celebrations, Anto\u0301nio Guterres highlighted the fact that Angola, within the scope of multilateralism in Africa, is committed to continental pacification.<\/b><\/p>\n

Angola, as a mediator in the process and champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, is developing initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and inclusive political processes that lead to conflict resolution in eastern DRC, CAR, Sudan and other regions of the African continent.<\/p>\n

Anto\u0301nio Guterres also praised the role of Portuguese-speaking countries in disseminating and valuing the language at the United Nations, stressing that he is pleased to follow the intervention in Portuguese in important meetings of the UN agenda, citing Mozambique as an example in the Security Council.<\/p>\n

With regard to the insertion of trained young people for positions available in the UN System, Anto\u0301nio Guterres suggested to the group of CPLP countries to organize awareness campaigns at university level about job opportunities.<\/p>\n

On his turn, the Permanent Representative of Angola, Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz, speaking on behalf of the CPLP group, recalled the role of the organization in building consensus and in the search for peaceful and sustainable solutions to the different challenges that arise in the work agenda of the Nations United.<\/p>\n

Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz expressed the desire for the Portuguese language to become the working language of the United Nations, having requested the support of the Secretary-General to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n

During the event that marked the celebration of the 27th anniversary of the CPLP and the 14th anniversary of the World Portuguese Language Day, Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz stated that cooperation between the community and the UN has been fundamental in promoting common values \u200b\u200band objectives and in defending of multilateralism in addressing global challenges.<\/p>\n

As acting chairman of the CPLP group at the United Nations, in New York, he underlined that the increasingly active participation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other international initiatives will allow Portuguese-speaking countries to benefit from effective cooperation and quality of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The Angolan diplomat assured that the CPLP and the UN will continue to work together, so that Portuguese becomes one of their working languages, as an unequivocal expression of the multilingualism and representativeness of the peoples that this international organization defends.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he stressed that the recurrent presence of CPLP Member States on the United Nations Security Council, as is the case in Brazil and Mozambique, currently, illustrates the importance that the CPLP attaches to international peace and security.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe share with the United Nations the commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts and multilateral cooperation to achieve a better future for all\u201d, he stressed.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz reaffirmed the CPLP’s commitment to valuing and disseminating the Portuguese language, whose diversity and capacity as a vehicle for understanding and complementarity between peoples is manifested in the fact that it is the most spoken in the Southern Hemisphere and the fifth in the world.<\/p>\n

He hoped that the moment of reflection and celebration would serve as an opportunity to renew the common commitment to promoting the Portuguese language and building a more just, peaceful and equitable world.<\/p>\n

The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries comprises Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe and East Timor, and has more than 30 Associate Observers.<\/p>\n

It is estimated that the community gathers more than 270 million people.<\/p>\n
