Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola’s participation in the Region 5 Games of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has evolved since its debut in the 2008 edition, held in South Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was confirmed by the National Director for Sports, Nicolau Daniel, in an interview this Thursday, in Luanda, in reaction to the organization’s 43rd Summit of Heads of State and Government, taking place from the 7th to the 17th of this month, in the capital Luanda.<\/p>\n

The official justified that over the years, Angola was among the 6th or 8th position in the general table of medals, but the paradigm reversed, significantly, for the better in the 2018 and 2022 editions.<\/p>\n

In the latter, held in the city of Lilongwe (Malawi), according to the source, the national delegation won 45 medals behind only South Africa.<\/p>\n

In total, Angola won 18 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals, leaving Zambia in third place, with 62 medals, namely 17 gold, 25 silver and 20 bronze.<\/p>\n

South Africa, in first place, accumulated a collection of 114 medals, including 62 gold, 30 silver and 20 bronze.<\/p>\n

Nicolau Daniel stated that the country’s rise in this regional event is due to the growth, above all, of the work carried out by clubs and federations, with emphasis on individual disciplines such as judo, swimming, adapted athletics and gymnastics.<\/p>\n

The official highlighted judo, whose delegation has been superior in relation to other sports but which all medals, in addition to swimming, which loses only to South Africa.<\/p>\n

In the range of those that most contribute to Angola’s current position in the Ranking, he also mentioned adapted athletics and taekwondo, the latter, even having integrated the 2022 caravan in experimental condition, ended up winning two medals.<\/p>\n

The games in region 5, reserved for athletes up to 20 years old, started in 2004 (Mozambique), followed later in 2006 (Namibia), 2008 (South Africa), 2010 (Eswatine), 2012 (Zambia), 2014 (Zimbabwe), 2016 (Angola), 2018 (Botswana), 2021 (Lesotho) and 2022 (Malawi).<\/p>\n

The region comprises 16 countries, including Comoros, DRC, Madagascar, Mauritius, Tanzania and Seychelles.<\/p>\n

SADC is an inter-governmental organization created in 1992 that aims to strengthen cooperation and socio-economic integration, as well as the relationship in matters of politics and security of the countries of Southern Africa.<\/p>\n
