Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, left, this Friday, the city of Ondjiva (Cunene), returning to the capital, Luanda, after having seen the works of the Ndu\u0301e and Calucuve dams, in the Cuvelai, in the context of the fight against drought in the south of the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

At the 11 de Novembro airport, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o received farewell greetings from the governor, Gerdina Didalewa, from some members of the Executive and from local authorities.<\/p>\n

Before his departure, the President of the Republic received in audience the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who is in Ondjiva to witness the episcopal ordination of Archbishop Germano Penemote, as apostolic nuncio in Pakistan.<\/p>\n

In the municipality of Cuvelai, where the two dams (Ndu\u0301e and Calucuve) are being built to combat the effects of the drought, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o visited some points of the two projects, whose works may be completed by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n

With the two structuring projects, the Angolan government wants to see the water supply to communities reinforced, as well as to livestock and irrigation of agricultural fields.<\/p>\n

The two projects, whose works were launched in 2021, are part of the program to combat drought in the southern region of the country, which provides for another six dams.<\/p>\n

With the two works, the Government expects to benefit 136 thousand people, 260 thousand heads of cattle, in addition to guaranteeing the irrigation of 11 thousand 600 hectares of agricultural land.<\/p>\n

The Calucuve Dam, in the Cuvelai basin, will have a network of channels, with a length of 111 kilometers and over 44 chimpacas.<\/p>\n

The Ndu\u0301e dam will have a 75-kilometre network of pipelines and 15 other chimpacas.<\/p>\n

The two projects join the Cunene River Capture System, from the Cafu region, a “successful” initiative that supports thousands of families, as well as livestock.<\/p>\n

During his stay in Cunene, the President of the Republic visited the works of the future General Hospital, which foresees a capacity for 220 beds, in an investment of 52 million euros.<\/p>\n
