Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) meet on Sunday (27) in Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301, focusing on “Youth and Sustainability”, the theme of the summit this year.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Heads of State and Government will meet during the organisation’s 14th summit, with Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe, the organizing country, assuming the presidency of the organization for two years, replacing Angola.<\/p>\n

In the preview, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal, Francisco Andre\u0301, welcomed Brazil’s return to the highest level of the CPLP, highlighting the symbolism of Lula da Silva’s presence at the summit, in Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301.<\/p>\n

During the mandates of Jair Bolsonaro and Dilma Rousseff, Brazil was never represented by the President of the Republic.<\/p>\n

In the opinion of Francisco Andre\u0301, Brazil’s institutional presence had been decreasing and the CPLP was rarely referred to as a diplomatic concern of the country.<\/p>\n

On the agenda of the summit will be, among other topics, the analysis of the increase in the quotas of each country in the order of 27 percent.<\/p>\n

The initiative aims to provide the organisation, through the Member States, with a reinforcement of their budgetary capacity.<\/p>\n

The organizers indicate that the presence of the Presidents of Angola, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, of Brazil, Lula da Silva, of Cape Verde, Jose\u0301 Maria Neves, and Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, have already been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Also confirmed are the participation of the Statesmen of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo\u0301, of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, according to a protocol source.<\/p>\n

Timor-Leste, according to the CPLP executive secretary, Zacarias da Costa, will be represented by the parliamentary president, Maria Fernanda Lay.<\/p>\n

Alongside the host Prime Minister, Patrice Trovoada, the presence of the Heads of Government of Portugal, Anto\u0301nio Costa, and Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, is also confirmed.<\/p>\n

Within the framework of the XIV Summit of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP, the President of the Republic, Carlos Vila Nova, and the Prime Minister, Patrice Trovoada, appealed to the unity of the Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301ans.<\/p>\n

Carlos Vila Nova considered that the theme “Youth and Sustainability”, chosen for the presidency of the CPLP, refers “to a deep reflection in view of the need to reconcile the country’s development with the preservation of the environment”.<\/p>\n

The Head of State of Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe considered it an opportunity to reflect on the consequent improvement in the quality of life of the populations.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Republic of Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe is an island country located in the Gulf of Guinea, on the western equatorial coast of Central Africa.<\/p>\n

The archipelago’s main islands are Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe. It became independent on July 12, 1975. It has an estimated population of 204,454 inhabitants (2018 estimate).<\/p>\n

Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe has a total area of \u200b\u200bone thousand square kilometers. It has a semi-presidential government system and a representative democracy.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic is the Head of State and the Prime Minister is the head of government.<\/p>\n

The country’s main economic activities are cocoa production and sugar cane plantation.<\/p>\n

CPLP summit<\/p>\n

The Summit of Heads of State and Government is the highest body of the CPLP, which is responsible for defining and guiding the general policy and strategies of the organisation.<\/p>\n

This body is also responsible for adopting the necessary legal instruments and implementing the statutes.<\/p>\n

The CPLP enshrines political and diplomatic coordination in its principles of respect for independence and equal sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and defense of the territorial integrity of Member States.<\/p>\n

It also proposes to promote Peace, Democracy, Human Rights, Development and Social Justice.<\/p>\n

The organization, founded on July 17, 1996, includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe and East Timor.<\/p>\n
