Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The governor of Cunene, Gerdina Didalelwa, asked this Thursday, in Ondjiva, to reinforce awareness-raising activities among motorists about measures to prevent road accidents.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch of the public consultation on the proposed Road Code Law, Gerdina Didalelwa, said that the rate of accidents in the province due to lack of knowledge of traffic regulations is a major concern.<\/p>\n

He made it known that during the first half of this year, the province recorded 184 road accidents, which resulted in 37 deaths and 278 injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must continue to develop educational activities on the prevention of road accidents, as well as combating excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and some negative behaviors that lead to accidents\u201d, he appealed.<\/p>\n

Gerdina Didalelwa recalled that, due to the high rate of accidents, this opportunity arises to review the Highway Code, which foresees increasing sanctions for violators of traffic regulation rules.<\/p>\n

For his part, the head of the drivers department at the National Directorate of Road and Traffic, Angelino Serrote, said that the new code incorporates new rules, such as the observance of zero percent blood alcohol level, the mandatory 12th class for access to a driving license.<\/p>\n

He clarified that the amendment to the Highway Code arose from the need to improve and adapt traffic and road circulation standards in the current context, in accordance with the Southern African Development Protocol (SADC).<\/p>\n

He made it known that the review of the aforementioned code will respond to the recommendations of the UN and WHO with a view to harmonizing the Angolan National Transit system with the Tripartite Transport and Transit Facilitation program in the regions that make up the member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).<\/p>\n

The launch of the public consultation on the proposed Road Code Law in Cunene was witnessed by the corporation’s general commander, Arnaldo Carlos, who was on a three-day working visit to the province.<\/p>\n
