Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>More than sixty fishermen living in the village of Ngolome, municipality of Cambambe (Cuanza Norte), recently vandalized the local Artisanal Fishing Observatory, due to the ban on activity using inappropriate techniques and material.<\/b><\/p>\n

The rebels removed 59 seized nets from the premises, destroyed some utensils and attacked a fishing inspection staff.<\/p>\n

At issue is the ban on the use of mesh nets smaller than 37.5 inches, on the practice of trawler fishing and muduco fishing (the use of sound instruments in sieges to capture fish).<\/p>\n

This Tuesday, the person responsible for Inspection in the commune, Francisco Manuel, explained that these practices are quite aggressive, as, in addition to disturbing the school, they result in the capture of large quantities of small fish and other aquatic species. .<\/p>\n

Fishermen also disregard the spawning season, annually between the months of February and May, to allow the fish to reproduce.<\/p>\n

Due to this situation, the inspectors suspended the activity, for fear of being attacked inside the lagoon.<\/p>\n

The head of the Fisheries Section of the Municipal Administration of Cambambe, Fernando Cardoso, said that, as a result of constant violations of fishing rules, many lakes in the region no longer produce quality fish, causing the migration of fishermen.<\/p>\n

The institution is working to raise awareness amongst fishermen, to refrain from these practices and prevent the collapse of the lagoons.<\/p>\n

With 99 fishing lakes, the Ngolome lagoon is located in the village of the same name, in the commune of Massangano, municipality of Cambambe. It is 14 kilometers long and has species such as cacusso, mussol, catfish, mullet, pelar and dibe.<\/p>\n

The village of Ngolome is 75 kilometers from the city of Dondo, seat of the municipality of Cambambe, and has approximately 1,500 inhabitants, of which around 600 are fishermen.<\/p>\n
