Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Angolan ambassador to the United Nations, Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz, stated in New York, United States of America (USA), that Angola will have a “very active” participation in the High Level Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, taking place from the 18th to the 26th of this month.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking to Public Television of Angola, the diplomat said that the event will help the country focus on the region’s Development Plan and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in addition to the challenges, opportunities and support needed to Africa meets the goals of the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, approved in 2015, is an action plan focused on defending people and the planet, which incorporates a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

Essentially, the plan aims to achieve prosperity respectful of the planet and its inhabitants, which is why it is divided into 169 goals to be achieved by 2030, with a view to providing a global response to climate change and other phenomena.<\/p>\n

The 2030 Agenda aims, among other goals, to eradicate poverty and hunger, ensure that human beings explore their potential with dignity and equality in a healthy environment, protect the planet against degradation, through sustained management of 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development of resources.<\/p>\n

Another purpose is to achieve peaceful, just and inclusive societies.<\/p>\n

According to Francisco Jose\u0301 da Cruz, Angola will have a first intervention at the SDG Summit, on Monday, in which the Angolan Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, will speak, as acting President of SADC.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be an opportunity to make the region\u2019s development plan in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals\u201d, said the diplomat, adding that, on the 20th, the President will speak at the UN General Debate to present his positions on in relation to Angola’s foreign policy.<\/p>\n

The Head of State, he explained, will intervene in his capacity as AU Champion for peace and Reconciliation in Africa and will address issues of peace and security.<\/p>\n

As for international politics, he anticipated that Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o would express his concern regarding the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

He defended, on the other hand, that the country’s authorities seek a negotiated position that will bring peace and stability in that region.<\/p>\n

The PR’s agenda also includes a series of hearings with his counterparts from Africa and the rest of the world, to address issues of international cooperation, development and security.<\/p>\n

Regarding climate change, the Angolan ambassador to the UN said that Angola will defend compliance with international decisions, that is, that everyone makes an effort to mitigate the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n

This year, the High-Level Debate takes place under the theme “Rebuilding Trust and Renewing Global Solidarity through Actions to Accelerate the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda to Achieve Peace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability for all”.<\/p>\n

The event will be chaired by Ambassador Dennis Francis, from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, elected to this rotating position on June 1, 2023, representing the Group of States of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC).<\/p>\n

The initiative takes place at a time when the international political-military, economic, social and climate situation is marked by various challenges and crises in different parts of the world, particularly in Europe and the African Continent.<\/p>\n

One of these challenges, which could be on the agenda of the Heads of State and Government present in New York, is the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has had a significant impact on the international situation, especially on the distribution of cereals.<\/p>\n
