Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Debate of the 78th United Nations General Assembly began this Tuesday, with the participation of more than 196 speakers, including Angolan President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, who will speak on Wednesday. <\/b><\/p>\n

The event discusses global issues such as climate change, sovereign debt relief and ways to help countries achieve global goals, in addition to conflicts, including Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

On the first day of the Debate, which runs until September 26, the UN Secretary-General, Anto\u0301nio Guterres, stated that the world is becoming more unbalanced and is experiencing an increase in geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n

According to Guterres, global challenges are increasing, but UN Member States seem incapable of responding to existential threats, in particular the climate crisis and disruptive technologies.<\/p>\n

In his speech, he emphasized that democracy is under threat, authoritarianism is on the rise and inequality is growing, having defended the fulfillment of each State’s obligations under the United Nations Charter, to guarantee the right to peace.<\/p>\n

The UN Secretary General said, on the other hand, that nuclear threats put the world and all its inhabitants at risk, stressing that ignoring global treaties and conventions makes everyone less safe.<\/p>\n

In turn, the President of Brazil, Lui\u0301s Ina\u0301cio Lula da Silva, defended greater equality in the distribution of world resources and asked, to this end, greater engagement from those who govern the world.<\/p>\n

According to Lula, the UN Member States are still a long way from achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, which is already halfway through its implementation.<\/p>\n

For him, the imperative of eradicating poverty and hunger is still a long way from being a reality, which is why he defends the reduction of inequality as one of the UN’s priority themes over the next seven years.<\/p>\n

Regarding internal politics, he said he will work to unite Brazil and build a sovereign, fair, sustainable, supportive, generous and joyful State, highlighting that the country is reconnecting with the world.<\/p>\n

North American President Joe Biden once again condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stated that that country is the only one hindering peace.<\/p>\n

According to the American Statesman, Russia thinks that the world will allow attacks on Ukraine to continue without consequences, a fact that could put global protection at risk.<\/p>\n

“We will have to defend Ukraine from this aggression and its future. We will defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity”, he emphasized.<\/p>\n

Joe Biden said, on the other hand, that the world cannot turn a blind eye to conflicts, such as that in Darfur and other places, having stated that the path is difficult, but that a base can still be built for everyone.<\/p>\n

This year, the General Debate, which will be led by the president of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, marks the first fully in-person meeting of world leaders at the organization’s headquarters, after the emergence of Covid-19.<\/p>\n

The event takes place under the theme “Rebuilding trust and rekindling global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.<\/p>\n

The General Debate of the 78th United Nations General Assembly was preceded by the Sustainable Development Goals Summit (SDG Summit), which has been taking place since Monday, in New York.<\/p>\n

At this event, which ends Tuesday, Heads of State and Government are reviewing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the 17 SDGs, Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n
