Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola reiterated, this Tuesday, in New York, United States of America (USA), its commitment to the abolition of nuclear weapons, through the country’s involvement in regional and international forums, as well as through the full implementation of the Treaty from Pelindaba. <\/b><\/p>\n

According to a press release from the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations, the position was expressed during a high-level plenary meeting that aimed to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, within the scope of the work of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

In her intervention, Angola’s permanent representative to the United Nations, in Vienna, Austria, ambassador Isabel Godinho said that the country’s commitment is embodied in the fact that the world “carries enough scars resulting from the use of nuclear weapons”.<\/p>\n

In this sense, he highlighted that it is imperative to educate and raise awareness among young people, to create an environment of peace, devoid of nuclear weapons, as such devices cannot be considered legitimate by any State.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must avoid nuclear war and the proliferation of these types of weapons in order to reverse our trajectory towards climate change, without forgetting that spending on these weapons diverts substantial resources from many other areas of human and environmental need\u201d, he stressed. .<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the country’s efforts to promote peace and maintain global security, highlighting that it is a responsibility that extends to countries that have nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

He recalled that it was in this spirit that Angola signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2018, illustrating a clear commitment to contributing to the eradication of nuclear weapons, as well as to international peace and security.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that the country has worked diligently to join the National Data Center of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), understanding the need for greater engagement, both individual and collective, to realize the aspiration of a free world of nuclear weapons as urgently as possible.<\/p>\n

The General Assembly declared the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in December 2013, through resolution 68\/32, following the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament, held on 26 September of the same year. , in New York.<\/p>\n

With the commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, the high-level meetings convened in parallel with the General Debate of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which ended on Tuesday, come to an end.<\/p>\n
