Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Angola reaffirmed, on Friday, at the UN headquarters in New York, its commitment to the total elimination of colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking in the general debate of the Fourth Commission on the Situation Relative to the Implementation of the Declaration of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Angolan Mission to the UN, Mateus Luemba, emphasized the need for lasting application of the obligations of the Charter of Nations United States and the principles of international law relating to Non-Self-Governing Territories.<\/p>\n

The diplomat recalled that 78 years after the creation of the United Nations, issues of decolonization continue to be struggled with, noting that to date there are 17 Non-Autonomous Territories.<\/p>\n

Mateus Luemba highlighted that the implementation of the 2030 Agenda must be inclusive and global in nature, so that everyone can benefit from the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, people in the Non-Self-Governing Territories are being left behind in implementing the SDGs,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Regarding Western Sahara, he stressed that the resolution demands the urgent and unconditional implementation of all resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as relevant decisions of the African Union to achieve a lasting, peaceful and political solution.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Ambassador Mateus Luemba encouraged closer cooperation between the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and the AU High Representative for Western Sahara and former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano , to improve interaction with all interested parties, including the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n

He also reiterated the call to all parties involved in the Malvinas Islands Question to resume bilateral negotiations in accordance with the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations and the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly in order to achieve, as quickly as possible, possible, a peaceful and lasting solution regarding the sovereignty of those Islands.<\/p>\n

Regarding Palestine, he stated that Angola welcomes all initiatives for a comprehensive and peaceful solution in the Middle East, which call for the implementation of two-state solutions, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.<\/p>\n

There are currently 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories, namely: American Samoa, Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, French Polynesia, Gibraltar, Guam, Montserrat, New Caledonia, Pitcairn, Saint Helena, Tokelau, Turks Islands and Caicos, US Virgin Islands and Western Sahara.<\/p>\n
