Its main musical instrument is the batuque.

The tenacity of its members makes the group one of the most active in the region in rescuing the ancestry of the Bailundo Kingdom and the entire Ovimimbundu ethnic group, translating into a true example of the heroism of African women in the promotion, preservation and conservation of the continent’s cultural values. .

As a result of its achievements, which also had repercussions on achieving peace and national reconciliation (2002), the group, made up of more than 100 members, holds several awards in cultural competitions and festivals, as well as in carnival parades, with emphasis on the National Culture and Arts Award, dance category, in 2014.

The death of the leader

Last May, the Katyavala group lost its leader, Júlia Nangueve, aged 61, to illness. Mama Júlia, as she was affectionately treated in the group, was one of its founders, embracing the project at the age of 21, in the company of other women who continue to do their best to grow the movement.

The news took everyone by surprise, leaving the collective devastated, which continues to be shaken by losing a leader who worked hard for the development of the association, from its creation to the present day.

According to the Group’s secretary, Mavildes de Assunção Alves, the death of the leader left a huge void in the group, due to her tireless fight for the good of the organization and all its members.

“Right now, we are struggling to recover from the impact of this irreparable loss, which comes a year after the death of our first secretary, mother Natália”, he continued.

The effort, he said, with the support of the Bailundo kingdom, the municipal administration and the provincial government, has been to keep the organization united and cohesive, in order to continue the work and honor the leader.

From culture to agriculture

To ensure the self-sustainability of the group and its members, the association decided to create an agricultural cooperative, called “Tuaiolela Katiavala”.

It is dedicated to the production of sweet potatoes, reindeer potatoes, cassava, soybeans, corn, beans and various vegetables, in a space of more than 16 hectares of arable land.

According to Mavildes de Assunção Alves, part of the harvest, whose results are quite satisfactory, is directed to consumption by members and the rest for sale. The amounts collected revert to the community fund.

In terms of projects, he said that the cooperative plans to raise cattle, goats and pigs, as well as poultry.

For Bailundo’s Deputy Municipal Administrator for the Social Policy and Communities Area, Lami Neyuva Mateia, the Katyavala group is a reference in the development of communities.

The person responsible highlights the group’s help in moralizing society, through its actions aimed at recovering ancestry, disseminating and valuing the habits and customs of the kingdom and the entire central region of the country.

His songs, in his opinion, are full of lessons that appeal to citizens about the need to follow good practices and good social coexistence, as well as to fulfill their civic duty to participate in the municipality’s development process.

Its contribution to the development of communities is also based on the fact that it has an agricultural cooperative, which has greatly helped to promote employability and combat hunger and poverty.

Because of this, the person responsible reaffirmed the Municipal Administration’s commitment to continue supporting the group, which it considers to be a true promoter of national culture and the development of the municipality.

The director of the provincial Office of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, Jeremias Piedade Nambongue Chiessanga, also reaffirmed his support for the group, highlighting the association’s singing potential.

In his view, he has contributed greatly to the development of the culture of the province, the region and the country, in general, through his dedication to rescuing and preserving cultural values.

Sociologist Atanagildo Paulo highlighted the fact that the association is made up solely of women, giving the collective a special character.

“With an investigative bent and cultural manifestation, this group, which has gained a national dimension, has raised the region’s culture to the highest level, contributing to the implementation of the challenges of recovering local cultural values, habits and customs”, he highlighted.

In addition to the batuque, in its performance the group also uses instruments such as “onhedjengo”, “ombulumbumba”, “katchenke”, “otchisandje”, “tchingunfu”, “kaluhi”, “kalyalya” and “olunguaya”. .

Throughout its existence, it inspired the emergence of several groups in the 11 municipalities of Huambo, including Katchitiopololo (Bailundo), Tuiula (Caála), Essandjo Liowingui (Huambo) and Deolinda Rodrigues (Ucuma).

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
