Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Italy will participate in the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), taking place in Luanda, from the 23rd to the 27th of this month, assured, this Wednesday, the Italian ambassador accredited in Angola, Cristiano Gallo.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking to the press, at the end of the meeting with the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, the Italian diplomat said that his country will participate in the magnificent event with a high-level delegation, led by Pier Ferdinanndo Casini, former president of the IPU ( 2005 to 2008) and currently honorary president of this multilateral organization.<\/p>\n

According to Cristiano Galo, Italian participation in the 147th General Assembly of the IPU is a demonstration of the rapprochement of the two parliaments, giving a new impetus to bilateral relations in the parliamentary domain.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that the event constitutes a great opportunity to share challenges that parliaments face and, at the same time, demonstrate the great capacity that Angola has in organizing highly relevant international events.<\/p>\n

“We are very proud of the fact that this country will welcome delegates from all parliaments in the house of Angolan democracy”, stressed the diplomat, highlighting that this fact demonstrates the progress that Angola has achieved in recent years in various areas.<\/p>\n

During the hearing, Carolina Cerqueira informed her interlocutor about the work done in the “Casa das Leis” throughout the first year of the V Legislature and future objectives.<\/p>\n

Excellent relationships<\/p>\n

The ambassador emphasized that relations between Angola and Italy are excellent, recalling the visit that President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o made last May to that European country, to reinforce bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n

He made it known that the governments of both countries are currently working “to implement what was decided in Rome”.<\/p>\n

The Angolan Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, paid a state visit to Italy in May 2023, at the invitation of President Se\u0301rgio Mattarella, who was in Angola on an official visit in February 2019.<\/p>\n

The Italian Government has considered Angola a priority country for its cooperation strategy in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1989, being its third partner after South Africa and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The turnover between Angola and Italy, to date, is around two billion US dollars, but the European partner intends to increase it with the diversification of commercial cooperation sectors.<\/p>\n

Angola and Italy established diplomatic relations on June 4, 1976. Vena\u0302ncio de Moura was the first Angolan ambassador to this country, having presented the Letters of Credentials to the then President of the Italian Republic, Giovanni Leone, on November 21, 1977.<\/p>\n
