Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Finance, Vera Daves de Sousa, stated, Wednesday, in Morocco, that sub-Saharan Africa must increase its representation on the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).<\/b><\/p>\n

This observation was made during his speech at the Round Table on \u201cIMF Priorities and Policies\u201d, promoted by the Secretary of the American Treasury, Janet Yellen.<\/p>\n

According to the head of the Angolan delegation, who is in the city of Marrakech for the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, there is a legacy that needs to be resolved for the IMF to successfully fulfill its its commitment to giving greater visibility to Sub-Saharan African countries in the global macroeconomic scenario.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is necessary to appoint the third President for Sub-Saharan Africa on the IMF Board of Directors, who is the least represented on the board. Strong institutions fulfill their commitments. Let us make the IMF fulfill its commitment to increase the voice of sub-Saharan Africa. Let\u2019s strengthen the IMF together, with more support from our region,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Finance website, Vera Daves de Sousa assured, on the other hand, that Angola supports the continuity and increase in quotas, as well as the completion of the 16th general review, to improve the power of the IMF.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe creation of the third president will be convened with reform measures, including the recent G-20 decision to establish a permanent representative for the African Union, in order to strengthen Africa’s voice on important global financial issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Angolan Finance Minister stressed that several countries grew and their positions in the world economy changed, in a context \u201cof crisis after crisis, and economies, especially developing economies, were drastically affected by them. Therefore, stronger action from the fund is required, greater participation of everyone in decisions and a more representative voice of the countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

The minister also considered that the relevance of the Bretton Woods institution depends on the ability to adapt its political advice and set of lending tools, given the central role it occupies in the global financial architecture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand that reinvestment in the institution is necessary. In the future, it will continue to be necessary to adapt to changes in reality and strengthen it, in fulfilling its mission, so that it continues to better perform its role of providing solid macroeconomic support, political advice, technical assistance and financial assistance to countries \u201d, emphasized the Minister of Finance.<\/p>\n
