Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) praised, this Friday (13), the decisive role played by Angola in resolving conflicts in Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to a note, this recognition was made by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, when speaking at the closing of the 74th session of the UNHCR Executive Council, which took place from the 9th to the 13th, in Geneva ( Switzerland).<\/p>\n

In May 2022, the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, was designated \u201cChampion for Reconciliation and Peace in Africa\u201d, due to his commitment to pacification on the continent, especially within the scope of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRG ) and other areas.<\/p>\n

In his intervention, Filippo Grandi also praised the efforts of Angola which, on Tuesday (10), announced, during the general debate session, a financial contribution to be made in the coming days, for 2023 and 2024, in favor of the various programs carried out by UNHCR.<\/p>\n

In turn, the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, Margarida Izata, defended the need for UNHCR member states to exert more political will and greater economic investment to put an end to the causes of forced displacement, as well how to establish robust human rights protection frameworks in affected countries.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, he pointed out that the mixed movements of migrants and asylum seekers have forced States to implement new status determination systems with a view to providing a more appropriate response to each situation. However, managing this phenomenon requires, among other things, others, a global approach and the implementation of efficient migration and asylum management systems.<\/p>\n

Margarida Izata reiterated our country’s commitment to international protection, because in this context Angola continues to improve its institutional and regulatory framework regarding international protection for the more than 52 thousand refugees and asylum seekers welcomed in the national territory.<\/p>\n

The diplomat announced that \u201cAngola has resumed the general biometric registration process for the attribution of new identification documents to refugees and asylum seekers, which will result in greater speed in the processing of cases, as well as the creation of better social conditions, with a view to including refugees in national public policies\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to Margarida Izata, within the framework of the \u201cI belong\u201d campaign, Angola is also committed to implementing effective measures aimed at reducing the risk of statelessness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this regard, with regard to expanding the registration database for Angolan citizens abroad, 35 civil registration posts were set up in 18 countries, from 2020 to 2022, with the aim of breaking the chain of unregistered adults and unregistered children\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

The Angolan multisectoral delegation welcomed the primacy assumed by UNHCR in the protection of internally displaced people in all its programs and recognized the efforts made, in collaboration with partners at regional level, to strengthen asylum systems, as well as promote the inclusion of displaced people in programs of national development.<\/p>\n

Angola is, since April 2023, number 108 out of a total of 127 member countries of the UNHCR Executive Committee and has worked in partnership with this UN Agency in implementing policies and programs for the reception and integration of refugees in Angola.<\/p>\n

The country participated in the 74th Session of the Executive Council (ExCom) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which took place in Geneva from 9 to 13 October, with a multisectoral delegation led by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonc\u0327a, and made up of Ambassador Margarida Izata, Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, and senior staff from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women, Justice and Human Rights.<\/p>\n
