Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The start of the booster phase of the polio vaccine, which is expected to immunize 5.4 million children from zero to five years of age in Angola from the 13th to the 16th of this month, constitutes, among others, the social highlight of the week that ended Saturday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The campaign involves the involvement of 45,645 technicians, included in 9,52 vaccination teams, 3,367 national mobilizing, vaccinating and monitoring supervisors, 218 national and provincial advisors and 208 logisticians.<\/p>\n

The initiative will increase the immune level of children, with an additional booster dose, as well as reinforce epidemiological surveillance by carrying out active searches for suspected cases of acute flaccid paralysis in communities.<\/p>\n

On this subject, the Secretary of State for Public Health, Carlos Alberto de Sousa, reaffirmed the Angolan Executive’s commitment to strengthening vaccination coverage against polio in children under five years of age.<\/p>\n

The first phase of vaccination took place from the 8th to the 11th of September, covering 5.6 million children, the result of the work of eight thousand vaccination teams and 2,500 supervisors who, overcoming challenges, managed to reach the most remote areas.<\/p>\n

This week, the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Angola, Antero Pina, highlighted the commitment of the Angolan Executive in promoting actions that aim to guarantee the health of children.<\/p>\n

Antero Pina praised the efforts of the Angolan government and partners in immunizing children under five years of age across the country, recalling that Angola successfully eradicated the circulation of the wild polio virus in 2015.<\/p>\n

Also noteworthy was the announcement of assistance to 65,434 patients with eye problems, from January to September this year, in the country, made by the general director of the National Ophthalmological Institute of Angola (IONA), Lui\u0301sa Paiva.<\/p>\n

The person responsible informed that her institution carried out, from January to September this year, five thousand and 198 surgeries on patients with eye problems, with cataracts, diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, eyelids, ametropia and glaucoma being the most common pathologies.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the II Scientific Conference of the National Ophthalmological Institute of Angola, which addressed the main challenges of this pathology in the country, with around two hundred doctors and specialists, including Angolans, Cubans and Americans, the director pointed to high blood pressure and diabetes as the main diseases which causes further changes to the ocular system, even leading to blindness.<\/p>\n

Angola has 95 specialist doctors in this area, of which 58 are national. In the same period of 2022, around 68,238 patients were treated.<\/p>\n

This week, the National Director of Mental Health, Massoxi Viga\u0301rio, announced that the Integrated Mental Health Network, at primary level, currently consists of 202 health units, distributed across 67 municipalities in the country’s 18 provinces.<\/p>\n

According to the person responsible, the number has grown significantly over the last nine years, going from 18 hospitals in 2013 to 202 in this fourth quarter of this year, reflecting an increase of 184 mental health care centers for children and adolescents.<\/p>\n

Regarding activities related to World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10, he mentioned that the growth of such infrastructures was motivated, essentially, by the creation of the National Health Development Plan 2012\/2025.<\/p>\n

According to the Secretary of State for Public Health, Pinto de Sousa, the Integrated Network of Mental Health Services in Angola (RISSM) assisted, from 2020 to the first half of 2023, 359 thousand and 579 people with mental disorders.<\/p>\n

The person in charge provided this information at the opening of the 11th Conference on \u201cChild and Youth Mental Health\u201d, having clarified that the most frequent disorders are drug use disorders, psychotic disorders due to alcohol use, schizophrenia, delusional ideas, stress, secondary neurotic disorders and mood and somatomorphs.<\/p>\n

The participation of a delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Health in the SADC meeting of E8 Ministers of Health and Finance for the elimination of Malaria in the Southern African region, which takes place in Windhoek, Namibia, also received attention.<\/p>\n

The meeting takes place from the 11th to the 12th of October, under the motto \u201cZero Malaria Starts with Me\u201d and aimed to discuss strategies to combat malaria in the SADC region, in order to ensure that more countries are declared free of the disease.<\/p>\n

Malaria continues to be the leading cause of death in these countries. According to last year’s (2022) SADC report, 63 million cases and 42,871 deaths were recorded.<\/p>\n

Another highlight of the week was the inauguration of TV ZIMBO facilities in the province of Huambo, by the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas Albino, to equally serve the contents of Bie\u0301 and Cuando Cubango.<\/p>\n

After cutting the ribbon, which symbolizes the official start of the television network’s newsroom activities in this region of the Central Plateau, the Secretary of State received explanations about the operation of the institution, located in the Sa\u0303o Pedro neighborhood, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the Secretary of State said that the inauguration of TV ZIMBO was a source of satisfaction and pride for the citizens of the provinces of Huambo, Bie\u0301 and Cuando Cubango and that it will ensure the realization of citizens’ right to necessary information.<\/p>\n

During this period, musician Carlos Lamartine, teacher Rosa Roque and the group Gingas do Maculusso were distinguished as “Municipalities of Merit”, the highest distinction in the province of Luanda, in recognition of their achievements in the field of music.<\/p>\n

The tribute ceremony was led by the governor of Luanda, Manuel Homem, from whom they received a diploma of merit and a piece of glass.<\/p>\n

The governor said that this tribute is a mechanism that aims to encourage citizens of the province to carry out actions that contribute to the good of Luanda.<\/p>\n
