Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) begins Monday (23), in Luanda Bay, with a focus on promoting peace and democracy.<\/b><\/p>\n

The technical work of the biggest inter-parliamentary event will take place at the Palace of the National Assembly, which becomes “the legislative capital of the world”, until Friday (27).<\/p>\n

Dozens of delegations from all over the world are already on stage at the event, representing an opportunity for hundreds of deputies to chart the paths towards peace and effective democratization of countries.<\/p>\n

The meeting, whose technical work has been taking place since Sunday, with the holding of preliminary meetings of various bodies, such as the Gender Partnership Group, the Human Rights Commission of Parliamentarians, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians of the IPU and the SADC Geopolitical Group , reserves a vast agenda and debates on current international hot topics.<\/p>\n

Participants will also analyze, through the three IPU Standing Committees, topics such as “partnerships for climate action”, promoting access to affordable green energy and ensuring innovation, responsibility and equity (Standing Committee for Sustainable Development ).<\/p>\n

Likewise, they will discuss preparations for the parliamentary meeting of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), scheduled for the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

The Standing Committee for Democracy and Human Rights will discuss the topic of “trafficking in orphanages” and the role of parliaments in reducing harm.<\/p>\n

The Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs will hold panel discussions on the UN’s field presence in support of national development, in the case of Angola, as well as taking gender equality to the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

The reform of the Security Council to a stronger multilateral regime will also be debated.<\/p>\n

Premiere of the UIP Anthem<\/p>\n

At the event, which brings together more than a thousand deputies from around the world, including some presidents of the organization’s 179 parliaments, Angola will have the privilege of premiering the UIP anthem, to be sung by the Kaposoka symphony orchestra (a genuinely Angolan children’s and youth musical project ).<\/p>\n

Election of the new president of the IPU<\/p>\n

At the 147th UIP Assembly, the organization’s 31st president will be elected to replace Portuguese deputy Duarte Pacheco. Four women from parliaments in Africa are running for office for a three-year term.<\/p>\n

These are Adji Diarra Mergane Kanoute\u0301, from Senegal, Catherine Gotani Hara, from Malawi, Tulia Ackson, from Tanzania, and Marwa Abdibashir Hagi, from Somalia.<\/p>\n

It is the first time in the history of the organization that an election will take place with only female candidates and all from the African continent.<\/p>\n

“It’s a right that assists us, we are in a “century of women”, it was Africa’s turn to elect a woman and these four candidates emerged. It was a natural thing. One of the candidates is currently a member of the UIP executive committee”, revealed the event spokesperson, Idalina Valente.<\/p>\n

In 2021, Duarte Pacheco replaced Mexican Gabriela Cuevas Barron, at the end of her three-year term. In the last 25 years, the post has been occupied by deputies from countries such as Egypt, Spain, India, Chile, Italy, Namibia, Morocco, Bangladesh and Mexico.<\/p>\n

Bahamian accession<\/p>\n

At the Luanda meeting, members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) will be able to deliberate on the accession of the Bahamas, as the organization’s 180th member Parliament.<\/p>\n

Located in the north Atlantic, the Bahamas archipelago is made up of around seven hundred islands, of which only thirty are inhabited. With a total area of \u200b\u200b13,949 km2, its main neighbors are the United States and Cuba. Its neighbors are also Haiti and Turkis and Caico\u0301s, both to the southeast.<\/p>\n

All governing bodies of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) will meet in person in the Angolan capital, Luanda.<\/p>\n

Angola has been a member of the IPU since 1986 and is the second Portuguese-speaking country to organize an event of this magnitude, after Brazil, which took place 60 years ago.<\/p>\n

The 146th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) was held from 11 to 15 March this year, in Manama, capital of Bahrain.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1889, on the initiative of the Englishman William Randal Cremer and the Frenchman Fre\u0301de\u0301ric Passy, \u200b\u200bthe UIP is one of the oldest political organizations in the world and currently has more than 46 thousand deputies from 179 national parliaments, promoting peace and democracy.<\/p>\n

It is a center for dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy between legislators representing all political systems and the main political ideologies at a global level, constituting a unique platform for observing political opinions and trends around the world.<\/p>\n

The IPU is the main parliamentary interlocutor of the UN and brings the voice of parliaments to the decision-making processes of the United Nations, regularly presenting its resolutions in the General Assembly, making statements, participating in debates and organizing parliamentary meetings on the main themes of the UN agenda.
