Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>Around a thousand participants, representing 90 delegations, are already in the country to participate in the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), starting this Monday, in Luanda Bay.<\/b><\/p>\n

The data was presented this Sunday, in the country’s capital, by the event’s spokesperson, Angolan deputy Idalina Valente.<\/p>\n

According to the parliamentarian, who was reporting on the situation to the press on the last day before the main meeting, some delegates are still expected, especially parliament presidents, until next Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Idalina Valente said that a total of 1,500 participants are expected, having ensured that all conditions are created for the success of the event, from accommodation to technical and material aspects.<\/p>\n

This Sunday, the work agenda was filled with preparatory meetings, at the headquarters of the Angolan Parliament, with emphasis on the Executive Committee, the highest body in the organizational structure.<\/p>\n

Parliamentary leaders from SADC countries and members of the geopolitical group attached to this sub-region of the continent addressed issues related to the so-called “point of urgency”, linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and religious issues, as well as the four candidacies for the presidency of the IPU .<\/p>\n

Also, issues related to the election of the president of the Group of Parliaments of Latin America were discussed, among others.<\/p>\n

According to the spokesperson, the matters discussed will be submitted for analysis, starting Tuesday (24), at meetings of the Board of Directors and the Parliamentary Assembly.<\/p>\n

He made it known that, as part of the preparations, issues related to finances had already been reviewed, as well as documents relating to resolutions to be adopted, which will also receive treatment at the level of the Permanent Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he said, meetings of the presidents, vice-presidents and heads of delegations of the African Geopolitical Group also took place.<\/p>\n

The 147th General Assembly of the IPU takes place from the 23rd to the 27th of this month, under the motto \u201cParliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions\u201d, for the first time in an African country, and is expected to elect a new president to replace the Portuguese Duarte Pacheco.<\/p>\n

Running for the position are the president of the Parliament of Tanzania, Tulia Ackson, and deputies Catherine Hara, from Malawi, Adji Diarra Kounate\u0301, from Senegal, and Marea Hagi, from Somalia.<\/p>\n
