Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Southern African Development Community (SADC) called, this Wednesday, for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.<\/b><\/p>\n

In a statement signed by the organization’s Acting President, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, SADC states that the immediate lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe is against the backdrop of growing concern about the impact on the country and the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a regional family, SADC firmly agrees that sanctions targeting some individuals in Zimbabwe have a negative impact on the country. It has been more than 20 years since the imposition of these targeted sanctions \u2013 two decades marked by the inability of the people of Zimbabwe to fully achieve their potential in various sectors as a Nation,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n

According to the organization, this reality, which is not new to the international community, damages Zimbabwe’s image and limits its potential access to financial and capital markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scale of this blockade to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic growth in terms of the livelihood of its people represents a modern-day atrocity that we, as the SADC family, consider to be an impediment that leaves one of our members behind in the common quest for integration, regional growth and prosperity\u201d, he highlights.<\/p>\n

SADC reiterates its desire that the international community take into account the Report of the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on human rights, Alena Douhan, during her visit to Zimbabwe, which proposes the lifting of sanctions within the scope of the fundamental principles of International Law.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur call for the lifting of sanctions against Zimbabwe is made as a firm request to the international community for a new rhetoric, a new story and a new direction for the country. The unconditional lifting of sanctions will create conditions for Zimbabwe and the SADC region to consolidate their collective efforts to boost national and regional growth and develop substantially in the critical areas of governance, human rights and social cohesion. It is therefore up to all interested parties to do their part to review the discourse in favor of the Government and people of the Republic of Zimbabwe\u201d, adds the regional organization.<\/p>\n

He adds that, at a time when global insecurities pose other pertinent challenges to Food Security on the African Continent and the SADC Region, the sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe create an alarming double threat to the livelihoods and survival of its people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs SADC, we remain willing to support, through whatever means necessary, the serious lifting of sanctions imposed on the Republic of Zimbabwe and we believe that the humanity we share as a global community will guide all relevant actors to take concrete measures in this regard\u201d, he highlights.<\/p>\n

In the statement, SADC reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with the Government and people of Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Angola holds the rotating Presidency of SADC, which includes Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
