Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, highlighted, this Friday, in Luanda, the role of parliamentary diplomacy for peace.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the closing of the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP) on parliamentary action, justice and strong institutions, Carolina Cerqueira said that parliamentary diplomacy, at all levels, has never been more urgent and necessary to raise awareness among governments and the various institutions in favor of peace.<\/p>\n

According to the leader of the Angolan parliament, deputies were urged to continue developing strong and interventionist parliamentary action, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, approved in 2015, is an action plan focused on defending people and the planet, which incorporates a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

Essentially, the plan aims to achieve prosperity respectful of the planet and its inhabitants, which is why it is divided into 169 goals to be met by 2030, with a view to providing a global response to climate change and other phenomena.<\/p>\n

He noted that, through legislative initiative, the adoption of Budgets and oversight of the Executive, Parliament encourages better governance at national, regional and local levels, and restores the conditions for social peace capable of supporting sustainable development and promoting literacy at all levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe need for Parliaments to include more young people and women, minority and disadvantaged groups in discussions and decisions was reaffirmed at the Luanda Assembly,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

In his view, the current generation of parliamentarians has the mission of breaking the ghosts of the dark part of human history and promoting efforts for the legacy of a world of peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, looking at gender, she considered the value of women unquestionable in the fight to defend peace at a global level, for sustainable development particularly in family farming, commerce, education and social action in favor of the most disadvantaged populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Assembly demonstrated the importance of inclusion, particularly of young people, the main human potential of our countries, as well as women who make up the majority of our populations worldwide\u201d, he asserted.<\/p>\n

He said that, at the end of the work of the 147th General Assembly of the IPU, he felt a sense of duty fulfilled, as the values \u200b\u200bof friendship, cooperation, dialogue and fraternity of Africans with the rest of the world represented by parliamentarians had been exalted.<\/p>\n
