Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The North American trade program (AGOA), which currently benefits more than 30 countries in Africa, must adjust to the reality of African economies, defended, on Saturday, the Minister of Commerce and Industry of South Africa, Ebrahim Patel.<\/b><\/p>\n

The South African official also revealed that his sub-Saharan African counterparts and US trade representatives have reached an understanding so that the export trade program facilitates small business trade.<\/p>\n

“But we were clear that we do not want AGOA to be rewritten, we do not want it to be dismantled and a complete review to be carried out, we are looking for small adjustments”, he highlighted, quoted by Lusa, at the closing of the 20th annual Growth Law Forum and Opportunity for Africa (AGOA), in Johannesburg, the economic capital of South Africa.<\/p>\n

The US trade pact, created in May 2000, grants eligible African countries tax exemptions on around 6,900 products for export to the U.S.<\/p>\n

Of the 54 countries in Africa, at least 35 currently export to the United States under this program, which was renewed in 2015 and expires in September 2025.<\/p>\n

Eligible countries include Portuguese-speaking Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sa\u0303o Tome\u0301 and Pri\u0301ncipe.<\/p>\n
