Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Angolan ambassador to Cuba, Maria Ca\u0302ndida Teixeira, highlighted, on Friday, in Havana, the help of the Cuban people in defending national sovereignty and in the fight against the regular army of the apartheid regime in South Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

The diplomat, who was speaking at the ceremony celebrating 48 years of national independence, thanked the Cuban people and the then Commander Fidel Castro for their prompt intervention, with human and military resources, in an epic dubbed \u201cOperation Carlota\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe date of November 11th led Angola to establish itself as a sovereign and independent State during the difficult and complex context of the Cold War, in a bipolarized world divided by confrontation within the international community\u201d, he asserted.<\/p>\n

Maria Ca\u0302ndida Teixeira also conveyed a message of appreciation to the first countries that very early recognized Angola’s independence, a total of 18, of which two are from Latin America, (Brazil and Cuba) 11 from Africa and five from Europe.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the main gains of 48 years of independence and the commitment of the Angolan Executive, mainly since the achievement of peace in 2002, the Angolan diplomat highlighted the construction of modern hospitals, airports, ports, railways, schools and housing, to in addition to hiring thousands of teachers, doctors and nurses, many, if not most, of them trained in Cuba.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Angolan Executive has initiated a policy of diversifying the economy, in order to provide greater sustainability to the country’s development, based on the potential of natural resources, with measures aimed at attracting national and foreign investment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cuba and Angola currently maintain cooperative relations in several areas. In addition to the more than 54 bilateral agreements, highlight is the recent signing of 3 more agreements, namely the Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Tourism, in the field of Medicines Regulation and in the field of Investment Promotion between the Special Economic Zones of Luanda-Bengo and Mariel.<\/p>\n
