Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Governor of the Province of Luanda, Manuel Homem, said this Saturday that Angolans must have independence as a \u201clink\u201d that allows everyone to work, in a consolidated manner, towards the construction of an Angola capable of ensuring development.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking to the press at the end of the provincial event commemorating national independence day, which is celebrated the governor stressed that everyone’s commitment is needed for increasingly lasting social peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is necessary to continue to establish the pillars of peace, democracy and social progress in Angola\u201d, he argued, considering that actions have been carried out over time aimed at consolidating a more integral, developed and cohesive country, with results aimed at the development of different generations.<\/p>\n

According to Manuel Homem, the celebration of November 11th should be a moment to praise the precursors of this struggle, \u201cthose who shed their blood so that Angola could tread the path of independence\u201d.<\/p>\n

In Luanda, the anniversary was marked with the raising of the Monument Flag, at the Military History Museum, and the laying of a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, in the city’s downtown, both by the Minister of State and Head of the Military House of Luanda. President of the Republic, Francisco Furtado.<\/p>\n

This Saturday, Angola celebrates 48 years since it achieved Independence from the Portuguese colonizer, on November 11, 1975.<\/p>\n

This year, the central event of the festivities took place in the province of Lunda Sul, under the motto \u201cUnited for the Development of Angola\u201d.<\/p>\n

After around five centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, independence was proclaimed by Anto\u0301nio Agostinho Neto, the first President of Angola.<\/p>\n

The conquest represented the culmination of a heroic national liberation struggle, which began on February 4, 1961, when patriots, imbued with common ideals, armed with machetes, confronted the colonial power, assaulting Luanda jails to free co-citizens imprisoned for defending self-determination.<\/p>\n
