Angola signed a contract with Lobito Atlantic Railway, a consortium that will explore the Railway Corridor over the next 30 years. We expect the consortium to make significant investments in Angola and the DRC, totaling around half a billion dollars, to improve the railway system and provide services that meet international standards,” he said.

The diplomat also mentions the need for a pragmatic and incremental approach, within the scope of the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), based on current experiences to produce practical results.

“We are working on diversifying the economy, promoting national production and consumption and exporting our products to create jobs and increase income. Our economy still depends heavily on extractive industries, mainly oil and diamonds. However, we are actively diversifying and agriculture plays a significant role. We started exporting bananas and coffee, especially to Europe. We also produce and export salt to countries such as DRC and Zambia. We have initiated programs that encourage the private sector to become more involved in international markets, producing the quality needed for export,” he said.

In the energy chapter, the ambassador highlighted investments in non-polluting energy sources, highlighting the almost one billion dollar agreement with an American company for solar energy projects in the country.

“We are trying to invest more in renewable energy and educate people in this regard as part of our commitment”, he highlighted.

Peace and Security in the Great Lakes

In this regard, Francisco José da Cruz reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa, with particular emphasis on the pacification of the Great Lakes region.

In his view, the commitment of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, makes us believe that peace and security must be one of the priorities of Angolans.

“We have tried to help countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic achieve peace and stability. We work, within the scope of President João Lourenço as president of the CIRGL and his mandate under the African Union, to mediate the tension between the DRC and Rwanda. The fact that President Lourenço’s peers nominated him to be the AU Champion of Peace and Reconciliation shows that he has an important role in assisting Africa in addressing conflict prevention, management and resolution. We are also focusing on how to take these issues to the UN so that we can face the challenges together”, reinforced the ambassador.

According to Francisco José da Cruz, the Luanda Roadmap is a framework to bring peace and stability to the DRC. “Angola involved DRC authorities in sending a military force of around 450 soldiers to help create conditions for the cantonment of M23 forces. The process has been a bit slow, but we see the implementation of the Luanda process as a way to achieve much-needed stability in the DRC, especially with elections scheduled for later this year,” he said.

According to the diplomat, Angola is coordinating with other initiatives, such as the Nairobi Process, promoting a common and more synchronized approach to facing the challenges of peace and security in the DRC.

“President João Lourenço has been very involved. Due to our own experience, we believe that peace and stability are possible if interested parties are committed to finding common ground. Without peace and stability there will be no development. We hope that — with the support of regional organizations, the AU and the UN — the DRC can achieve the level of stability and political inclusion it needs to advance and develop”, he asserts.

In the environmental field, Francisco José da Cruz also reports on Angola’s concern about climate change, highlighting the fact that the country, specifically the southern part, is going through the worst drought in the last 40 years, affecting millions of people.

“We are also actively involved in development issues as we work towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union Agenda 2063. Finally, we are focusing our efforts on human rights, gender issues, youth and other critical issues linked to peace, stability and development”, he said.

Francisco José da Cruz also points out the impact of Covid-19, climate change and the war in Ukraine on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Angola.

He added that Covid-19 had a broad impact, diverting resources from economic development to face the threat. “Global economic challenges, inflation and our economy’s heavy dependence on oil prices have also affected our national development agenda. To resolve these problems, the government implemented social programs to provide monthly subsidies to vulnerable families,” he said.

Regarding the need for debt forgiveness for the poorest countries and more support from multilateral financial institutions to achieve the SDGs by 2030, he considered it to be a significant challenge for many African countries, noting that international financing with high interest rates undermines efforts. to mobilize resources for economic development.

For this reason, he said, Angola defends the review of international financial institutions to better align them with today’s world, with the aim of leaving no one behind.

The ambassador also highlighted the fact that women play a crucial role in the development of Angola, contributing since the fight for independence.

In Angola, women occupy 40 percent of top government positions, occupying key portfolios in the areas of finance, health, youth and sport, environment, work and social security and education, as well as the vice-presidency of the Republic and the presidency of the National Assembly.

angop

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
