Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of the Interior, Euge\u0301nio Laborinho, announced, this Thursday, the relaunch of agricultural production in reference penitentiary establishments in the country, to improve the diet of inmates and self-sustainment of the organ’s structures.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Minister of the Interior, who was responding to concerns raised by deputies regarding production in penitentiary units, as part of the discussion, in particular, of OGE-2024, indicated that the program is being implemented in penitentiary units in Bentiaba (Namibe), Peu-Peu (Cunene), Capolo (Bie\u0301), Caboxa (Bengo), Damba (Malanje) and Huambo (currently the organization’s largest granary in terms of agricultural production).<\/p>\n

The Minister of the Interior justified the choice of these penitentiary establishments to relaunch agricultural production due to the favorable climatic conditions and geographical location.<\/p>\n

During the parliamentary debate, deputies consider it essential to invest in agricultural and livestock activities in the country’s prisons, for the self-sustenance of the inmates themselves.<\/p>\n

The holder of the Interior portfolio also announced the opening, soon, of new penitentiary establishments.<\/p>\n

These are the prison units of Cacongo, in Cabinda, Cassosso, in the province of CuanzaSul and Boma, in Moxico.<\/p>\n

The Cuquema penitentiary unit, in the province of Hui\u0301la, which will also be opened in the near future, is 75% completed.<\/p>\n

The Matala penitentiary establishment, in the same province, is also being completed, where a production area is being prepared.<\/p>\n

The minister was responding to a concern presented by deputy Jose\u0301 Dambuca, from the MPLA, who calls for more production in penitentiary establishments in that region.<\/p>\n

The Minister of the Interior also announced the rehabilitation of several penitentiary establishments in the country that are in disrepair and, to this end, they are forming an alliance with some investors to carry out these projects.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the ministerial department’s commitment to the technical-professional training of inmates.<\/p>\n

The Penitentiary Service, a body assigned to the Ministry of the Interior, currently controls more than 24 thousand inmates, of which 12 thousand 584 are convicted and 11 thousand 462 detained.<\/p>\n

The agency has 40 penitentiary units across the country.<\/p>\n
