Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, inaugurated, this Monday, in Lunda-Sul, the Luele kimberlite project, which is expected to increase annual production in the country by around 13 million carats of diamonds.<\/b><\/p>\n

Luele is considered the largest diamond project in the country and the 3rd largest kimberlite in the world, with reserves estimated at 350 million carats and a useful life of 30 years.<\/p>\n

After cutting the ribbon and unveiling the plaque, the Head of State, accompanied by the 1st Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenc\u0327o, among other entities, pressed the mill button that signaled the start of the project and visited the treatment units and the room of final finishing.<\/p>\n

The installation of treatment plants and other structures at this deposit began in January 2017, with the signing of the constitution of Sociedade Mineira do Luele and the Memorandum of Understanding between ENDIAMA and Alrosa, with an investment of 350 million dollars.<\/p>\n

Located in an area of \u200b\u200b104 hectares, Luele has capacity for 1,500 workers and, in the first phase, the expectation is that it will reach just over 1 million carats per year and a gross revenue of 60 million dollars per year.<\/p>\n

In 2021, in a balance presented by ENDIAMA on the company’s achievements, in the year in question, the mine produced 1.7 million carats of diamonds, with a degree of compliance of 172.5%, in relation to the schedule and an average monthly production of 143.7 thousand carat diamonds.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the mine has its roots in 2012, when ENDIAMA began, with Alrosa (Russian state diamond company), the scientific study of potential diamond areas and their respective prospecting.<\/p>\n

The objective was to identify and locate the origin of alluvial diamonds explored in Angola over more than 100 years of history.<\/p>\n

Until May 2023, more than US$555.4 million had been invested in studies, infrastructure construction and other important areas.<\/p>\n

Prospecting activities at the mine, with a volume of 34 million mines, began between 2012 and 2017, reaching a depth of 95 meters.<\/p>\n

Luele Kimberlite<\/p>\n

The Luele kimberlite chimney is located in the Luele river basin, approximately 35 kilometers from the city of Saurimo. It was discovered in November 2013, as a result of geological research carried out by the Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, in order to strengthen and increase its mineral resource base.<\/p>\n

The Luele Kimberlite Chimney is explored in the open pit and involves three sequential stages of work, namely dismantling, loading and transporting the mining mass.<\/p>\n

These activities aim to ensure physical access to the horizons where the ores are located, through the gradual deepening of the mine, implementing the geotechnical parameters that determine the stability of the slopes in the mine and guarantee the safety of operational personnel, materials and equipment.<\/p>\n

To this end, the overlying waste rocks are first directly removed, and this material is sent for processing at the treatment center or for storage in ore stocks.<\/p>\n

Mining exploration activity in Luele takes place based on established long, medium and short-term plans, respecting the best practices and rules of mining exploration.<\/p>\n

Dismantling operation<\/p>\n

The dismantling operation in the mine is carried out using hydraulic excavators with a capacity of 4 to 8 cubic meters, which can be complemented by large bulldozers to enable the disintegration and scarification of the ore.<\/p>\n

The blasting operation is expected to evolve into a combined “mechanical and dynamic” process, involving drilling and blasting (TPD) work.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the loading and transport of mining mass at the Luele mine is cyclical and results from the combined action of its fleet of loading equipment (excavators and loaders), together with the fleet of transport equipment made up of articulated trucks. 45 tons and 100 tons rigid trucks.<\/p>\n

In the future, Luele will implement a management system for its equipment fleet that will ensure monitoring capacity, maximize productivity and improve the operational cost structure.<\/p>\n

Social responsability<\/p>\n

In this context, the resettlement of populations around the Luele kimberlite is underway, involving the construction of 36 T3 masonry houses, construction of primary schools and a medical center, supply of drinking water and electricity via solar panels (Samuhinge neighborhood ), water supply systems for seven communities, among others.<\/p>\n

The implementation of the resettlement project for more than 300 families with support infrastructure (medical center, schools, among others) is also underway.<\/p>\n

Diamond trading<\/p>\n

During the first half of 2023, Angola sold around 2 million and 933 thousand carats of diamonds, at an average price of 202.61 US dollars per carat, which corresponded to a gross value of approximately 594.17 million US dollars.<\/p>\n

For this year, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET) expects to close with a gross revenue of around 12.41 million carats.<\/p>\n

As for exports, the information available shows that they totaled around 4 million and 66 thousand carats, making a gross value of approximately 711 million and 738 thousand US dollars.<\/p>\n

The United Arab Emirates, with 65.6 percent, and the Kingdom of Belgium, with 29 percent, were identified as the main destinations for Angolan diamond exports. The other 5.4 were exported to various destinations.<\/p>\n

It is expected that with the entry into operation of the Luele Mine, in Lunda Sul, the sector will meet the production target established for the year 2023, estimated at 12.41 million carats.<\/p>\n

The country currently has around 150 million carats of diamond reserves, of which 80% are from primary resources and the remaining 20% \u200b\u200bfrom alluvial projects.<\/p>\n

In general terms, looking at the year 2022, Angola produced around 8.76 million carats, a fact that allowed the country to occupy sixth position in global production, according to data made available by the Kimberley Process.<\/p>\n

Currently, 16 companies linked to diamond exploration and around 41 projects are in prospection operate in the Angolan market.<\/p>\n
