Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The director of the provincial office of Social Action, Family and Gender Equality of Cunene, Georgina Braga, asked families Monday, to adopt a more open dialogue to prevent cases of violence in the home.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking regarding the commemorative days of November 25th, the International Day to Combat Violence against Women, he said that most cases of domestic violence happen due to a lack of dialogue.<\/p>\n

The official stated that, for social reasons, couples experience serious problems in society, which influence their way of living, but can be resolved based on the principle of dialogue and respect.<\/p>\n

He recalled that violence against women is a complex problem, and combating it requires integrated actions at different levels, areas and instances.<\/p>\n

He made it known that the office has promoted awareness-raising activities to encourage women to overcome the barriers of silence and gain a culture of reporting, in favor of a society free of violence.<\/p>\n

Georgina Braga encouraged women to invest in academic and professional achievements to assert their rights and actively participate in public policies.<\/p>\n

Cunene recorded 88 cases of domestic violence in the period from January to September this year, 53 of which involved abandonment of home, 22 psychological violence, six physical violence, four property violence, two sexual violence and one verbal violence.<\/p>\n

The International Day to Combat Violence against Women was established in 1999 by the United Nations (UN).<\/p>\n

The date was chosen to honor the Mirabal sisters (Pa\u0301tria, Minerva and Maria Teresa), murdered by the dictatorship of Leo\u0302nidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n
