Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Angolan financial system is considered embryonic, in relation to the level of maturity regarding environmental sustainability issues, considered this Thursday, in Luanda, the governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), Manuel Tiago Dias.<\/b><\/p>\n

The person in charge, who was speaking at the Forum on sustainability in the Angolan financial system, said that in December 2022 the Financial Supervisory Board carried out a diagnosis to assess the level of maturity of the social, environmental and governance principles and criteria of national financial institutions and found It is in an embryonic stage.<\/p>\n

For this reason, he said, in September this year, the Council of Supervisors of the Angolan Financial System recommended financial institutions to gradually adopt the sustainable principles of the financial system, instruments that represent the regulators’ initial approach to the development of environmental and social policies and governance.<\/p>\n

According to Manuel Tiago Dias, the BNA has implemented some actions to, in particular, prepare the banking system to adopt the best practices in sustainable finance.<\/p>\n

As a priority of the BNA’s strategy, he said, is the need to ensure that entities, under its supervision, deepen knowledge about the risks resulting from environmental, social and governance factors, as well as the transmission mechanisms and the way to impact the business.<\/p>\n

In this sense, he continued, the Central Bank has prioritized cooperation with international organizations, and the process of joining a multilateral institution, which comprises 114 central banks, is underway.<\/p>\n

Cooperation, he pointed out, aims to help strengthen the global response necessary to meet the objectives of the Paris (France) agreement on climate change and reinforce the role of the Angolan financial system in managing risks and mobilizing capital for low-cost green investments. carbon, in the broader context of environmental and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

Manuel Tiago Dias informed that the BNA is part of the consultation group of an international payments bank body, where some central banks participate, with the aim of outlining, among others, the way in which the global banking system should manage climate risk.<\/p>\n

“The interaction with the aforementioned institutions will allow the BNA to prepare itself, as a monetary and exchange rate authority, and understand how climate change impacts the economy, from the perspective of demand and supply”, he highlighted.<\/p>\n

The National Bank of Angola (BNA) promoted the Forum on sustainability in the Angolan financial system, with the aim of raising awareness among operators about the adoption of environmental, social and corporate governance principles.<\/p>\n
