For a few days, press took the pulse of small, medium and large farmers, who feed many homes in Angolan towns and cities.

What follows are, therefore, the reports of producers from communities in the various villages in the communes of Calulo, Cabuta, Munenga and Quissongo.

In the town of Quirianga, around fifty kilometers from the emblematic town of Calulo, there are agricultural fields as far as the eye can see, especially cabbage, which now reaches as far away as Saurimo, in eastern Angola.

Here (Quirianga), which is considered, so to speak, the “horticultural lung” of the Province of Cuanza Sul, we heard the cries of producers about financial support, difficulties in transporting products, such as the precariousness of access roads to agricultural fields.

The connection to the town of Calulo, from the EN 120 and from here to the interior communities, is, these days, one of the main bottlenecks for agricultural activity in Libolo, with dozens of vehicles completely stuck in the mud.

In Quirianga alone, there are twenty-four farmers concentrated, who dedicate themselves, in addition to cabbage, to the production of cassava, corn, tomatoes, pepper beans and other products.

As a result, much production is lost in the various agricultural fields. And this is what most rural men complain about.

Such is the case of Banjamim Capagaio, owner of more than twelve hectares, of which nine are completely worked.

He says he faces “many difficulties”, from transplanting the nursery, to shipping to large markets, especially in Luanda, Malanje, Ndalatando, as well as Calulo.

The day we passed by his property, we found him loading a van with 4.5 tons of cabbage towards the country’s capital. He explains that during that time he has already made five shipments, something he could overcome if it weren’t for the poor condition of the roads.

At this time, he is particularly concerned about the transplantation of a hectare of tomatoes due to a shortage of labor, which he seeks, fundamentally, from Bailundo, Huambo Province. Due to financial difficulties, he had to lay off three of his six workers, creating huge constraints on production. Banjamim Capagaio then lists enormous needs, such as various fertilizers, pesticides, hoses, motor pumps and other means, to guarantee irrigation.

The farmer adds that, “we are practically just surviving, making amends because the difficulties are enormous”.

His colleague Segunda Máquina, who owns around 400 hectares, with production mainly of corn, beans, and ginguba, aligns with the same principle, stating that the main difficulty is the lack of financial support, which would allow the production areas to be expanded. .

At this time, corn is being sown, the harvest of which can reach 700 kilos per hectare, discounting the damage caused by some pests and wild animals, especially monkeys, the hills near the farms are abundant on the slopes.

In the next sowing season, Segunda Máquina will invest in the bean sector, but refuses to provide, for now, any diagnosis on yields. “It will depend a lot on other factors, such as the quality of the soil”, he says, cautiously.

The farmer adds, if producers had at least properly equipped tractors, they would be in a position to “flood” the national market and recalls that, in the past, more than sixty vans of cabbage, tomatoes and pepper.

His colleague Inocência Ferreira explains that the situation is so critical that currently tractor rental costs around 200 thousand kwanzas. “This is something affordable for farmers’ pockets and we are, therefore, far below our potential”, she adds.

He then showed us huge tracts of land completely covered in corn, from which he expects to harvest at least seven tons per hectare. “I have seven hectares of corn here,” he says, interrupting, for a moment, the work of fertilizing tomatoes on one hectare. On another hectare, he is producing cassava, foreseeing three thousand “macro tree” beauties.

Inocência Ferreira, forty-eight years old, who employs twelve people, explains that currently, due to the difficulties in acquiring fertilizer, especially and other means, production depends a lot on rain, like the one that falls these days, abundantly in the Libolo region, to the joy of farmers.

He clarifies that with the increase in fuel prices, farmers had to reinvent themselves, opting to use gas for irrigation. “Just remove the carburetor and make a direct connection and that’s it”, highlights Inocêncio Ferreira.

The same difficulties

Albino Domingos is another farmer based in the fertile Quiranga valley. He opened his thirty-two hectare property press, to show the production of citrus fruits, such as mango trees, avocado trees, corn, cabbage, beans, tomatoes, in addition to goat farming.

Last year, it collected more than four tons of corn, but saw a drop in tomato production, due to the pest that affected the region, leaving it at around five hundred boxes, while for cabbage it sent four to five vans to the markets. “Very little”, as he says, indicating that this represents just over twenty tons.

“Here, in Quirianga, we have already produced great productions, but due to the lack of support we are going down”, he adds, noting that he has already fed the markets of almost the entire country, with emphasis on Saurimo, Luanda, Malanje, Ndalatando, in addition to the country itself. Cuanza Sul”.

Like other farmers, he reveals that in the field, “a lot of money is spent” and indicates that with at least 10 million kwanzas he would be able to keep his property minimally sustainable.

Albino Domingos is particularly concerned about the freight for vans transporting the products, which he considers to be high. “We ended up paying more than one hundred and fifty thousand kwanzas”, he highlights, adding that the situation leaves producers desperate and with very little profit margin.

It highlights, however, “within limitations”, that farmers receive from the Municipal Administration of Libolo, namely various fertilizers, ammonium and other inputs.

The jobs that are being lost are another concern for farmers based in downtown Quirianga. “Imagine, if each of the twenty-four farmers here employed at least sixteen people, the gains this would represent for the municipality of Libolo”? argues.

State support

Engineer Barroso Muteba Saizama is director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries at Libolo. It was with him that we explored the interior of the municipality. He explained what concrete support is for farmers.

“In the last agricultural campaign, eight thousand peasant families received due technical assistance and around 12 thousand hectares were prepared, with an average productivity of 24 four thousand tons”, he said.

But these numbers are expected to grow at this time, as Barroso Saizama explains. 29 thousand tons of various products are expected with the involvement of eight thousand and two hundred families, working on around 13 thousand and 200 hectares.

But numbers aren’t everything. To provide sustainability to family farming, the Libolo authorities made at least seven tons of various fertilizers available to producers.

The families also received two tons of yellow corn, several tons of white corn, as well as one of beans and another of massambala, a continued exercise by the authorities, with the aim of increasing production levels, as the person responsible for agriculture said.

Barroso Saizama states that the Agrarian Development Station (EDA) has around 312 families controlled throughout the territory of Libolo, who have technical support on the best agricultural practices, while another 800 will have assistance from Grupo Carrinho.

These are data from the current agricultural campaign, for which more than 97 tons are expected, including compound fertilizers and ammonium.

The director of agriculture in Libolo looks at the results of the latest harvests and says that, contrary to the general impression of those traveling along National Road number 120, the neighboring Municipality of Quibala has been progressively losing space to Libolo in agricultural products, something that brings “added responsibilities”.

“The situation has been inverted for some time now. Products such as sweet potatoes, cassava, peanuts, beans, bananas and others resold in the Quibala market are purchased in Libolo”, boasts Barroso Saizama, who hopes also due to increasing remittances with the improvement of communication routes to agricultural fields.

In addition to the abundance of rain, he highlights the vast water network, with rivers such as the Cuanza, Luhwa and Quizaca, in the North, Futy, Luinga and Mbuiza (East), as well as the Longa, Luaty, Muconga and Muxixe, further in the South .

“All this potential gives us the guarantee of being able to aspire to the status of a larger agricultural company”, he highlights.

A world of agricultural properties

In Quirianga, we were also on the property of a young man, better known as “Troia”, Francisco Droia, after his name. The photos of Arsénio Bravo, with whom we walked through Libolo’s agricultural fields, don’t lie. There are several hectares completely green with cabbage. In between, cassava production takes place on this property, on one of the lower areas of this property which borders the town of Xixila.

Xixila should be highlighted, for being a pioneer in the implementation of crops such as vines, which allowed the setting up of an industrial plant for the production of tableware – pass advertising, as well as olive groves, for the production of olives and their derivatives.

In addition to Francisco Droia, on the Luaty line, for those heading to Quibala, we also saw the properties of Pascoal Raul, Domingos Caliombo, Alberto Benjamim and Inocêncio Dianchin and, on the side, the farms of António Manuel Domingos, “Diwé” and “Tia – Ká”, a well-known businesswoman from Calulo, who also invests in the hotel industry.

All producing, but having, as a common feature, the difficulties of communication routes, something that is reflected in the flow capacity to the main consumption centers.

This is the situation that repeats itself in the areas of Umba, Quimguba and Longolo, for example. But there is no shortage of people committed to working in the field, despite everything. There are a lot of people in the agricultural fields, at this time of great floods.

This is also the case in Kiundo, near Calulo, before reaching Quissongo, with a stop at the Weza Montez farm, in Paca, in Quirianga.

Farms invest in the production of tropical fruits in Quissongo

Libolo is, today, an unavoidable fruit reference, due to the project being developed at Fazenda Canduma and also for Cleomas, another large investor in Cuanza Sul.

Further north, towards the commune of Quessongo, is what can be considered one of the reference agricultural units in the Libolo region. Specifically, we are talking here about Fazenda Canduma, in Cambau, a family property, created sixty-seven years ago by Manuel Teixeira da Cunha, whose owner is his son, the well-known businessman Carlos Cunha.

We climbed the agricultural enterprise, which stands out, both for its size and for the number of fruit trees as far as the eye can see. More than 500 hectares of various tropical fruits are nearing completion, the same space and investments already made, following the strategy for its expansion.

There is, in fact, a high concentration of technical equipment on site, such as irrigation piping, machines, among other logistical means.

From its manager, Marcos Lima dos Santos, we gathered some “interesting” numbers, reflecting the grandeur of the enterprise: initially with 15 hectares, passion fruit production alone will reach around 150 hectares. “A very significant production volume”, says Marcos dos Santos.

In addition to pineapple, at Candumba the focus is on citrus fruits, avocado and mango, which will be developed in the first and second phases.

Avocado will have the largest area, with around 300 hectares, in the end.

At our insistence, from Luanda, the farm owner tried to explain part of the projects.

“Farm Canduma is the largest tropical fruit unit in Angola and one of the largest in Africa”, boasts its owner, adding that if it produces at cruising speed, it can reach around 24 to 30 thousand tons of natural fruit , at a time when current production will be around 800 tonnes, rising to 12 thousand in three years, as Carlos Cunha says.

Part of the fruit will be transformed into pulp and juice, and work is already underway for the future industrial unit within the farm. In addition to the domestic market, another will be exported, the businessman clarified.

Continuous investments

Still to be determined, the investment in Canduma could ultimately reach 10 billion kwanzas, and the fruit processing units alone will consume 300 million kwanzas, according to Carlos Cunha.

He mentioned that, of the ongoing investments, seventy percent are his own resources and the remaining thirty are from banks, which are not quantifiable at this time.

This businessman, who also invests in the Hotel sector, guarantees 200 direct jobs, a number that could rise to 350, including middle and senior technicians, administrative staff, machine operators, drivers and irrigation staff.

More clearly, some numbers are provided: “More than 1,500 hectares are prepared for coffee production, 500 of which are already irrigated for Arabica coffee and 1,000 are dryland for Robusta, with shade from palm trees.”

The businessman highlights the institutional support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, in areas such as licensing, certifications and technicians and assumes that one of the main constraints is financial resources, although he recognizes a “great effort by the Development Bank of Angola” in supporting the business community.

Social responsability

Fazenda Candumba is reached from the commune of Quissongo via a completely earthen road, in line with the concerns linked to the social responsibility of this agricultural unit. “Other accesses were also improved, with own resources”, explains Carlos Cunha, who highlights concerns about improving communication routes in Libolo.

“The access road to the municipal headquarters is, in fact, worrying, but we know that it is being rehabilitated”, he highlights.

And it is also with a view to social responsibility, that workers are transported in vehicles, recovered from transport companies, while inside the agricultural unit a rural store was created, completely computerized and inserted into the VAT system.

To the surrounding communities, the store products, at special prices and to the farm workers on credit, which is an innovation.

“From next January, the Farm will be connected to the Isagri information system, which allows management to be monitored online”, guarantees Carlos Cunha.

The villages close to this agricultural unit are electrified, using generators from the farm, which simultaneously invested in an artesian well, as an alternative for capturing groundwater.

We saw dozens of people with containers supplying this furon inside the farm.

The sun was already setting on the horizon when we passed Cleomas, a unit with more than 700 hectares, which was created in the 90s of the last century for the production of coffee, and also has as its core the large-scale production of fruit. of different types, especially citrus fruits, making it a reference in the national market.

Semicolon in the first part, in Libolo units. We then went to Fazenda Cabuta, which with more than 2,000 hectares is the leader in coffee production in the Cuanza Sul region, providing work for more than 400 people, something very valued, in a region where the levels of unemployment are particularly high.

In the town of Candumbo, in the commune of Quissongo, another destination, on this excursion through the Libolo agricultural units, we saw an extension of production of palm trees, cassava, coffee, bananas, corn and various fruits.

Not to mention the same complaints: repair of communication routes and financial support to increase production.

These producers do not need large sums of money to work, but the essentials that allow the acquisition of various fertilizers, ammonium and work instruments.

This is the opinion held by many farmers organized in associations or cooperatives, which we were able to discuss at Libolo.

But the municipal administrator of Libolo, Rui Miguel, whose interview ends the series of reports in one of the most prosperous agricultural regions of Kwanza Sul, says that the Government is developing an ambitious program to reverse the situation.

Jornal de Angola

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
