Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, highlighted this Saturday, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Angola’s commitment to renewable energy, which represents one of the main pillars of adaptation to climate change, constituting a decisive step in the energy transition process.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the Head of State, who was speaking at the COP 28 World Climate Action Summit, Angola faces all issues relating to climate change with great firmness and commitment, which is reflected in the National Strategy for Climate Change 2022 \u2013 2035, which contains initiatives and visions aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue of climate change is part of the central priorities in all sustainable development programs and strategies that we outline in the Republic of Angola, which we consider a critical concern, therefore deserving special attention, always with the aim of strengthening our resilience in the face of the effects of these changes, which have already hit the Angolan people very seriously in their daily lives, due to the risk of destruction of ecosystems of different species in some regions of our country\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o highlighted the special relevance of the event and stated that the country is determined to change the national energy matrix, favoring clean energy production sources with the construction of hydroelectric plants and photovoltaic parks, which mean that more than 65% of The current 6,400 MW of energy produced in the country is already from ecologically recommended sources as they are environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n

He referred to the ongoing program to extend the national energy transmission network from the main production sources located in the lower Kwanza basin to the eastern and southern provinces of the country.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic said that his ambition for the next four years is to discontinue the use of thermal power plants that still power some parts of the national territory, which will represent not only a large financial saving, but also a great environmental benefit with the significant reduction in the burning of fossil fuels in electricity generation.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that Angola is building and expanding old hydroelectric dams, which have provided the country with a significant increase in its electrical energy production capacity and generated a surplus that can meet the needs of SADC countries, especially with the completion of hydroelectric development of Caculo Cabac\u0327a and the beginning of works on the binational project of the Baynes hydroelectric dam on the Cunene river, for Angola and Namibia.<\/p>\n

In the context of the efforts we have undertaken to significantly increase our renewable energy production capacity, he highlighted, very special attention has been devoted to the implementation of photovoltaic projects in some areas of the country, resulting in a huge reduction of annual diesel consumption and, consequently, a contribution to mitigating the effects of pollution and meeting the electrical energy needs of the populations of these locations.<\/p>\n

Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o highlighted that, still in this field, Angola has a project to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives, starting next year, while work is being done on projects to reduce carbon dioxide and methane gas emissions in industry oil company as \u201cour contribution in the fight against the increase in global temperatures, which has increasingly affected our planet\u201d.<\/p>\n

He stressed that, within the framework of the broad measures that the Angolan Government has been taking to improve all the mechanisms within its reach, with the purpose of playing an important role in the context of global efforts to preserve the Environment, it is part of the Space Strategy Angola’s national initiative consists of observing the Earth using a satellite that is being negotiated with the European consortium AIRBUS, for the detection and mapping of oil spills at sea.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the provision of data on deforestation and areas of illegal logging, the tracking of wildlife herds in the main national parks and environmental reserves, the monitoring of compliance with environmental standards in mining activities, including a technological solution designed to support monitoring compliance with the indicators of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that Angola submitted its first national contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2015, maintaining with the same determination the objective of achieving a reduction in gas emissions in 35 % by 2030, if we can secure the necessary financing.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic considered it important that a roadmap be defined at this COP28 in which the steps to be taken are established, so that the commitments made at the Glasgow COP are honored, in which the objective of doubling financing for adaptation measures was defined. until the year 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the sidelines of this Climate Summit, Angola will join the initiatives of the United Nations and other specialized international organizations on the decarbonization of the oil and gas industry and on the need to measure and reduce emissions of polluting gases such as carbon dioxide and methane gas, with ambitious goals within the framework of the battle that Humanity is waging against climate change\u201d, stated the Head of State.<\/p>\n
