But that doesn’t make us happy, because this increase resulted from the fishing effort, that is, more vessels entered the seas”, he assumed.

Because fishing resources decrease year after year, José Gomes da Silva now hopes that there will be a decision from the Government on the reinforcement of sustainable management measures for fishing resources on the Angolan coast by 2024.

In his opinion, if the situation continues as it is, fishing resources will not be able to withstand this pressure, which is why it is necessary to reduce the number of vessels.

Trawling

In the interview to review the sector, given to Rádio Benguela, the director of the Fisheries Office once again expressed enormous concern about trawling fishing, as it was compromising the preservation of the species.

He made it known that around 50 vessels in the Benguela fleet carry out trawling for demersal species, with another seven trawling for pelagic species, such as sardines, horse mackerel and mackerel, which are unloaded either in the municipality of Baía Farta, or in Luanda.

Hence reinforcing the idea that hope lies with the Council of Ministers, from whom fishing owners in Benguela expect control measures over trawling on the Angolan coast next year.

For him, it would be satisfactory if trawling for pelagic species was banned from the Angolan coast and demersal fishing was significantly reduced, thus contributing to an increase in biomass and ensuring food security for the population.

“Given its capture capacity, we are talking about thousands and thousands of tons”, warns José Gomes da Silva, explaining that one trawler can correspond to 30 or 40 24-meter semi-industrial vessels.

The Director of Fisheries highlighted, on the other hand, that nationally there are around 350 industrial and semi-industrial vessels, with the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) being 304 thousand tons.

“If we divide all these vessels, there will be no sustainability, especially for large vessels, because these, to be sustained, really have to fish”, he warns.

angop

For More News And Analysis About Angola Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Angola.
