Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, interacted this morning, with different children from Cuanza Sul, on aspects linked to the protection of sea turtles in the country, within the framework of Ecological Christmas.<\/b><\/p>\n

In the company of the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenc\u0327o, the President questioned and, in a didactic way, clarified some of the children’s doubts about sea turtles and the importance of their conservation for humanity.<\/p>\n

In a second moment of interaction, the President also made the symbolic delivery of gifts, in reference to Ecological Christmas, to students at Hogiwa primary school.<\/p>\n

Upon arrival in the province of Cuanza Sul, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o received greetings from the governor, Job Capinha, and members of the central government.<\/p>\n

In this district, the President visited the sea turtle nesting area of \u200b\u200bthe Kitabanga Project, at the mouth of the Longa River, where he transferred hundreds of turtles to the sea and received information regarding the project.<\/p>\n

The head of state also visited an environmental education area and a workshop where women artisans work.<\/p>\n

Started in 2003, in the Palmeirinhas area, in Luanda, Kitabanga is a sea turtle study and conservation project implemented by the biology department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Agostinho Neto University.<\/p>\n

The project is in partnership with the Kissama Foundation and the University of Namibe, as well as with the approval of the Ministry of the Environment.<\/p>\n

It monitors 150 kilometers of the coast, being deployed in the provinces of Bengo, Zaire, Benguela, Namibe and Cuanza Sul.<\/p>\n

Over this period, it allowed the protection of 45 thousand nests, which resulted in the safe laying of four (4) million and 500 thousand turtles.<\/p>\n

President Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o develops this working day as part of his commitment to social policies, taking into account that this species is at risk of being on the verge of extinction.<\/p>\n
