Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Secretary of State for Climate Action and Sustainable Development, Paula Coelho, defended, this Saturday, the improvement of legislation for the preservation of marine species and specific education and awareness for children as immediate actions for the sector. <\/b><\/p>\n

The leader made these statements to the press as part of the visit of the President of the Republic, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, to the Kitabanga Project, dedicated to the study and preservation of turtles, in the municipality of Porto Amboim, Cuanza Sul province.<\/p>\n

Paula Coelho stressed that the ongoing work will focus on turtles, as they are a species on which there are already more advanced studies.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet this be the pilot project or model, but these are some of the immediate actions that we will follow up on as the Ministry of the Environment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She stated that the ministry has been following the exercise carried out by the Kitabanga Project, within its social program, to have better aware minds, at a critical time when species are in great decline.<\/p>\n

She defended greater investment, having mentioned the engagement of partners and the need for more sponsorship, especially for the community, as this will make it possible to overcome the challenges and have an increasingly better Angola.<\/p>\n

According to the Secretary of State, the geographical positioning of Angola and the Benguela current bring nesting areas and other species, so the country has a large collection still under study for science at national, regional and international level<\/p>\n

Paula Coelho spoke about the existence of other biodiversity projects, which, in his opinion, need some impetus, taking into account the dynamics, climate change and the intercession of man in ecosystems.<\/p>\n

He mentioned the project linked to the marine and riverine manatee species, under the responsibility of the Ango- fauna, in the prospecting and research phase.<\/p>\n

Likewise, he mentioned the embryonic project dedicated to the analysis of large river mouth plans in the province of Cabinda, which envisages the rescue of some species that shared the waters with the Zaire River, as well as the Palanca Project, relating to great apes, or primates, widely known, but very silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have the project ready. At this moment, the ministry is looking at mobilizing resources and sponsors, through the adoption of large gorillas, which are also being threatened by various phenomena\u201d, he highlighted.<\/p>\n

The Kibanga Project is dedicated to the study and conservation of sea turtles, implemented by the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Agostinho Neto University, in partnership with the Kissama Foundation and the University of Namibe, and with the consent of the Ministry of the Environment.<\/p>\n

It monitors 150 kilometers of the coast, being implemented in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Zaire, Benguela, Namibe and Cuanza Sul.<\/p>\n

Since its creation in 2003, the project has allowed the protection of 45 thousand nests, which has resulted in spawning in safety of four (4) million and 500 thousand turtles.<\/p>\n

This Saturday, the project was visited by the Head of State, Joa\u0303o Lourenc\u0327o, who, among other activities, transferred hundreds of newborn turtles to the sea, at the mouth of the Longa River, in the province of Cuanza Sul.<\/p>\n
