Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The International Cereals and Grains Conference, held in September as part of the IV Edition of the Potato and Corn Fair, and which allowed sharing experiences with Brazil and the USA, marked the year 2023 in the province of Bie\u0301.<\/b><\/p>\n

In this activity, promoted by the Agreement Group, in partnership with the government of Bie\u0301, the speakers recognized the country’s potential in this regard and concluded that Angola could become, within a decade, a powerhouse in the production of cereals and grains on the African continent. .<\/p>\n

At the event, the director of the National Grains Institute of Angola, Maria Garc\u0327a\u0303o, informed that Angola produced, during the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign, 622 thousand 804 tons of cereals, including wheat, rice, corn and soybeans.<\/p>\n

Despite not presenting comparative figures, the official mentioned that there was a considerable increase compared to last season, with prospects of reaching very high levels in the next campaigns.<\/p>\n

The conference triggered the need for producers across the country to definitely invest in large-scale production of cereals and grains, to allow the country to stop spending more than 450 million dollars on importing these products.<\/p>\n

The government of Bie\u0301 is committed to producing, by the end of 2027, more than one and a half million tons of cereals and grains in the arable regions of Camacupa, Andulo, Nharea and Chitembo, with priorities for rice, wheat, soybeans, corn and beans, which will directly involve local, national and foreign producers.<\/p>\n

The aim, which aims to make the national food chain self-sufficient, and drastically reduce cereal imports across the country, aims to produce, by the end of the four-year period, 300 thousand tons of rice, 237 thousand tons of wheat, 130 thousand tons of soybeans and close to of 750 thousand tons of corn and beans.<\/p>\n

The International Conference on Cereals and Grains in Angola addressed topics such as \u201cretrospective of agriculture-cereal production before Independence, post and current, \u201cimportance of cereals and grains for combating poverty and food security\u201d, \u201creflection on the seals made in Angola”.<\/p>\n

There were also topics related to \u201cinnovations, trends and new technologies in the production of cereals and grains\u201d, \u201crealities, opportunities and challenges of investment in the production of cereals and grains in Angola\u201d, resilient family farming: adaptation to climate change in the sustainable production of cereals and grains\u201d.<\/p>\n

Other topics were \u201cthe role of research institutes, their contribution to increasing the production of cereals and grains\u201d and the role of the Guarantee and Credit Fund in the national economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The event featured national and international speakers such as the director of the Agricultural Research Institute, Joa\u0303o Ferreira, director of the National Cereals Institute of Angola, Maria Garc\u0327a\u0303o, the administrator of the BDA, Arse\u0301nio Satyohamba, the Angolan researcher Andre\u0301 Sinela, the northern consultant American Waka Waka and the head of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company \u201cEmbrapa\u201d, Lauro Moreira.<\/p>\n

Participating in the event, among several individuals, were the governor of Huambo, Lotti Nolika, vice-governors, municipal administrators, national and foreign producers, businesspeople from different provinces of the country and national directors from different ministerial departments.<\/p>\n

A major contribution in this regard has been Fazenda Vinevala, which has already started operating, on an experimental basis, the first factory to transform wheat into flour in the central and southern region of Angola, with capacity to produce 60 tons\/day.<\/p>\n

Owned by farmer Alfeu Vinevala, the manufacturing unit is located on the premises of the Logistics and Distribution Center (CLOD) of the municipal headquarters of Chinguar, Bie\u0301 province.<\/p>\n

According to Alfeu Vinevala, all raw materials for transforming wheat into flour are produced on the Vinevala farm.<\/p>\n

He said that the factory could start up, 100 percent, in September 2024, at which point he hopes to also place the pasta, bakery and seed processing factories, to join the corn industry, already in operation.<\/p>\n

In the current agricultural season, the farm plans to cultivate five thousand 200 hectares of wheat, two thousand more compared to the last season.<\/p>\n

The idea, according to him, is to double the previous harvest, where the figure of 10 thousand tons of wheat was reached.<\/p>\n

In addition to wheat, the farm produced, during the last agricultural season, 500 tons of corn and 200 tons of beans, in addition to soybeans and peas.<\/p>\n

As for the IV Edition of the Potato and Corn Fair, promoted by the Government of the Province of Bie\u0301, 337 exhibitors participated, out of the 250 planned, coming from the provinces of Huambo, Luanda, Moxico, Benguela, Ui\u0301ge, Hui\u0301la, Bie\u0301 and Cuando Cubango.<\/p>\n

Under the motto “Plan, Produce and Develop”, the event took place from August 31st to September 2nd and raised more than 436 million 362 thousand and 409 kwanzas, resulting from the sale of one thousand 229 tons of various agricultural products.<\/p>\n

During the fair, the provincial governor, Pereira Alfredo, presented the figures for the 2022\/2023 agricultural campaign, with the production of 371 thousand 680 tons of corn, 70 thousand tons of beans, 411 thousand tons of cassava and 213 tons of reindeer potatoes.<\/p>\n

Soybeans and wheat stood at 10 thousand tons each and rice at 12 thousand tons.<\/p>\n

PIIM continues to rise<\/p>\n

As for the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM), 42 projects and actions were completed in 2023, which added to the 140 already completed since its implementation in 2019.<\/p>\n

Among the works completed and delivered to the population are the constructions of 21 schools, two health units, an equal number of public buildings, bridges and sports courts, as well as five asphalting projects for municipal headquarters and eight other earthmoving projects.<\/p>\n

In total, 182 projects have already been delivered to beneficiaries, of the 226 registered that make up the province’s general portfolio, and 29 projects will be completed by the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n

Highlight this year is the start of construction of the Cuito photovoltaic solar plant, with a capacity of 14.5 megawatts, as part of the Solar-Angola project, financed by the USA.<\/p>\n

The first stone was laid this December, by the Minister of Energy and Water, Joa\u0303o Baptista Borges.<\/p>\n

As part of this project, the province will also benefit from power stations in the municipalities of Chitembo, Cuemba, Nahrea and Andulo.<\/p>\n
