Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The director of the Office for Economic and Integrated Development in the province of Cunene, Felisberto Hisimungula, defended this Wednesday greater investment in the fish farming sector, in order to take advantage of water resources in the Cafu Canal and in the dam projects in the Ndu\u0301e and Calucuve.<\/b><\/p>\n

Felisberto Hisimungula made it known that investment linked to the fishing sector in the region is still small, which is why they intend to work this year on mobilizing investors and encouraging producers to explore these places.<\/p>\n

According to the person responsible, due to the lack of knowledge in this field, little or nothing exists in Cunene, highlighting that fishermen opt exclusively to explore river courses, which makes it costly and exhausting for environmental life.<\/p>\n

He reasoned that of the 83 projects financed under the Program to Support Production and Diversification of Exports and Import Substitution (PRODESI), only two are linked to the fisheries sector.<\/p>\n

Along these lines, he challenged operators and fishermen’s associations to compete for the various credit lines available, in order to benefit from financing and materialize into fish reproduction projects.<\/p>\n

He added that promoting aquaculture, in addition to increasing fish production in a short period of time, constitutes a profitable activity that appears as an excellent business opportunity, improves family diets and other socio-economic benefits.<\/p>\n

By way of example, he clarified that, compared to 11 November in Calueque, he is working based on funding from PRODESI, where some tanks were excavated for breeding fish in captivity, the results of which are satisfactory.<\/p>\n

Currently, 15 to 20 thousand fish of various species are breeding in each of the six excavated tanks.<\/p>\n

Data from the Department of Fisheries pointed out as the main fishing areas the towns of Calueque, Cafu, Xangongo, Naulila (Ombadja), Ruacana\u0301 and Chitado (Curoca), Calonga and Mukolongodjo, (Cuvelai) where fishermen take advantage of the watercourses of the Cunene River and Cuvelai.<\/p>\n

With an annual catch level of 280 tons of fish, with particular emphasis on quimaia, catfish and bocudo, their destination is the village of Xangongo and the cities of Ondjiva, Lubango and Huambo.<\/p>\n
