Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The government of Hui\u0301la reaffirmed Thursday, in Lubango, its commitment to continue promoting actions that contribute, in a sustainable way, to improving the living conditions of former combatants, as a way of better honoring the memory of the victims of Downtown Cassanje, January 4, 1961.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the event that marked the date of national celebration, in the municipality of Humpata, the provincial director of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, Vero\u0301nica Rito, highlighted the relevance of looking more at this fringe, for the sacrifices made, determination, bravery and selflessness, which culminated in the declaration of independence in 1975.<\/p>\n

For the person responsible, January 4th is an \u201cunforgettable\u201d date that must be remembered and dignified by every Angolan in memory of those who perished and fell in the peasant revolt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf today we live in peace, in a free country, and with the free movement of people and goods, it is because someone suffered, shed blood, sweat and tears, which makes us proud as Angolans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

January 4th is the Day of the Martyrs of Colonial Repression, the date on which in 1961 farmers from the then Angola Cotton Company “Cotonang” were murdered by the Portuguese colonial army in Baixa de Cassanje, for demanding better working conditions, exemption from payment of taxes and abolition of forced labor.<\/p>\n
