Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The vice-governor of Cunene for the political, social and economic sector, Apolo Ndinoulenga, advocated, this Thursday, in Ondjiva, the need for greater appreciation of the deeds of the heroes of Baixa de Cassanje, in order to preserve their legacy and serve as an inspiration for future generations.<\/b><\/p>\n

By intervening in the provincial act alluding to the Day of the Martyrs of Colonial Repression, the person responsible highlighted the bravery and determination of the peasants of Baixa de Cassanje, remembering that this action marked the beginning of the national liberation struggle, which culminated in the achievement of independence, on November 11, 1975.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe protest by the peasants of Baixa de Cassanje, more than an act of demanding rights, represented a heroic stand by the people for freedom and marked the beginning of the armed struggle. Therefore, this anniversary must be more publicized to serve as a source of inspiration for youth, with a view to continuing the construction of a more developed, democratic and inclusive Angola\u201d, he highlighted.<\/p>\n

The massacre in Baixa de Cassanje, in Malanje, occurred 63 years ago, when Portuguese troops indiscriminately killed thousands of Angolan peasants, and their families, who were dedicated to cotton production, for demanding the low prices charged by Companhia Geral de Algoda\u0303o \u201c Cotonang\u201d and the mistreatment imposed by the colonial regime.<\/p>\n
