Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The Ombudsman, Florbela Arau\u0301jo, reaffirmed this Friday, in Luanda, the need to review the Ombudsman’s Statute to become a national human rights institution. <\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with the chairman of the Committee of Experts on Human Rights and Child Welfare of the African Union, Wilson Ada\u0303o, stated that the \u201cParis Statute\u201d is the basis that stipulates that the Ombudsman be also an institution for the defense of human rights.<\/p>\n

The provider regretted that the proposal to change the institution’s Statutes was rejected by the National Assembly.<\/p>\n

He added that the Ombudsman’s Office already has its own budget, with just one Law needed to become a human rights institution.<\/p>\n

He promised to continue fighting for the approval of legislation in the National Assembly to become a National Human Rights institution and gain the credibility required by the \u201cParis Statute\u201d.<\/p>\n

Florbela Arau\u0301jo stated that the situation limits the possibility of accepting the invitation to become a member, as a human rights institution, of the Human Rights and Welfare Committee of the creation of the African Union.<\/p>\n

He pointed out as the main challenges the continuous struggle for the protection of children’s rights and guarantees, with the collaboration of schools, hospitals, daycare centers and police and judicial authorities, as well as women and the elderly.<\/p>\n

For the Justice Ombudsman, \u201cany country can only develop if it protects its children, as they are the future of the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n

He wanted an Angola without violation of children’s rights and to see the 11 commitments in favor of minors fulfilled.<\/p>\n
