Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The governor of the province of Cunene, Gerdina Didalelwa, defended this Monday, in Ondjiva, the search for common strategies that aim to combat cases of theft and cattle theft, which over the years have worried communities in the southern region from the country.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening of the IV expanded meeting of the southern judicial region of the Attorney General’s Office and the workshop on cattle theft, he said that the phenomenon requires special attention judging by the contour it has created in the socio-economic life of local populations.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that livestock farming constitutes one of the main economic activities in the region, which, along with agriculture, is considered a heritage asset and a symbol of the owner’s prestige and social affirmation within the community.<\/p>\n

The governor clarified that during 2023, police agencies recorded 158 crimes of livestock theft and theft in the province and the actions culminated in the recovery of 550 animals, 168 cattle, 365 goats, 13 pigs and six sheep.<\/p>\n

He made it known that the government approved, in 2020, a stance that establishes the rules to combat cattle theft, with emphasis on the attribution of brands to animals, licensing of traders, prohibition of cattle sales in transhumance areas, creation of a food market sales, definition of slaughter hours, prohibition of grazing for children under 14 years of age in an area far from homes.<\/p>\n

To monitor its implementation, he said, a multisectoral commission was created in charge of promoting awareness and translation into local languages \u200b\u200band respecting dissemination among communities.<\/p>\n

FENACOOPA<\/p>\n

For his part, the President of the Federation of Livestock Cooperatives of Angola (FENACOOPA), Salvador Rodrigues, advocated the need to create a rural police in strategic locations, as a network to prevent and combat cattle theft and theft.<\/p>\n

When focusing on the topic \u201cCattle Theft in the South of Angola\u201d, he explained that the rural police would act as a complement to the actions of self-protection forces on farms, with extensive action on environmental crimes, due to the high rates of slaughter of trees and wildfires.<\/p>\n

He made it known that the crime of cattle theft harms not only farmers but the breeders themselves and local communities, whose current statistics are \u201cworrying\u201d.<\/p>\n

The speaker revealed that the contours that the robberies reached, require open cooperation to face the situation, and to this end, greater cooperation between communities and justice bodies is required, to minimize the situation.<\/p>\n

Salvador Rodrigues also highlighted the need to change the law for perpetrators of these actions, who instead of being released and carrying out the same acts should remain in detention.<\/p>\n

He added that the release of the suspects has created problems within communities where the injured tend to take justice into their own hands.<\/p>\n

The provinces of Cunene, Hui\u0301la and Namibe are considered to be powerhouses in cattle breeding, and it is estimated that the three together can accumulate close to two million and 650 heads of cattle.<\/p>\n
