Africa-Press – Angola. <\/strong><\/span>The winners of the competition for the third edition of the Literary Prize \u201cWrite to remember King Mandume ya Ndemufayo\u201d will be announced at a public ceremony to be held on February 6th, confirmed on Monday, in Ondjiva, the Provincial Government of Cunene (GPC).<\/b><\/p>\n

According to the GPC’s Culture, Tourism and Youth and Sports office, the date was chosen in reference to the celebration of the 107th anniversary of the death of the sovereign of Cunene, in order to keep his legacy alive and cement in the memories of the new generation the achievements of this \u201cfearless monarch\u201d.<\/p>\n

The director of the Office, Nelson Ndelimukuata, highlighted that, in addition to honoring and perpetuating the legacy of the sovereign of the Ovakwanhamas, the Prize also aims to encourage literary creation through texts in Portuguese in the genres of poetry, short stories and articles of opinion.<\/p>\n

It is also intended to dignify and value the figure of King Mandume, through the appreciation of his life and work, political thought, organization of his kingdom and struggle to resist colonial occupation, he added.<\/p>\n

He recalled that competitors must deliver their texts to municipal administrations and Culture offices, to be evaluated by the panel of judges.<\/p>\n

The period for receiving candidature works, which began on December 20th, ends on January 20th.<\/p>\n

The last edition of the award launched, in 2022, was won by Belgines Dias, in the poetry category, Yolanda Ndamonamwene (short story) and Timo\u0301teo Kon Djeni (opinion article).<\/p>\n

King Mandume commanded the destinies of the Ovakwanyama people in one of the most difficult periods in the history of the southern region of Angola, from 1911 to 1917, when the Portuguese colonial regime intended at all costs to occupy the entire southern part of the country.<\/p>\n

And in the heat of combat, he chose to commit suicide, rather than surrender, on February 6, 1917, in the town of Oihole, where he was buried, explained the official.<\/p>\n

To praise the figure of King Mandume-ya-Ndemufayo, the Angolan Executive built, in 2000, in the town of Oihole, the tourist complex in his memory, where his remains rest.<\/p>\n
